I grew up in Chula Vista, and I’ve lived in San Diego for most of my life. I’ve also spent a brief time living in New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Cusco, Peru.

I’ve always been fascinated by language and culture, so I studied world literature and history while I was a student at UCSD. When I decided that I wanted to become a teacher, I earned my master’s degree from Duke University. As an English and ESOL instructor, I’ve had the privilege of working with students from all over the world. It is the best gift that I can imagine.

When it comes to my hobbies, teaching, writing, and spontaneous road trips are my greatest passions. However, I also love food! Carnitas burritos, large salads, and Island’s burgers are some of my favorites. To balance out all the eating that I do, I also need to keep active. Thus, I enjoy impromptu sports with my friends, like flag football and indoor rock climbing, and I participate in martial arts. I’m currently a purple belt in Taekwondo, and I’m learning more and more each week.

I was born and raised right outside Washington, DC (GO REDSKINS!).  I moved here almost three years ago to pursue my Master's degree in Teaching from Point Loma Nazarene University.  I live in Ocean Beach, which I'm convinced is the BEST part of San Diego.  I have two adorable cats - I'm totally obsessed with them!  When I'm not smothering the cats with affection, I'm out riding my bike, hiking, finishing final edits on my never ending thesis, reading or watching marathons of Law & Order.  I love anything Shakespeare, Emerson or Thoreau and I hope to one day write a novel about my wonderful mother.  Finally, I'm SUPER excited to be working at Miramar and I really hope that my presence will make a difference somehow this semester!

My name is Vickie and I grew up in the Clairemont area in San Diego. For my bachelor’s degree, I majored in Literatures of the World and minored in Ancient Greek at UCSD. After I graduated, I moved to Greece to study Modern Greek language and I taught English to cover my expenses. I liked teaching English so much that I decided to make it my career! I moved back to San Diego in 2009, and then earned a master’s degree in applied linguistics from SDSU. Since I moved back to San Diego, I have been teaching academic writing, basic skills, and ESOL. I love working with students from other countries, and I am looking forward to meeting new students in the language lab this semester.

I love to mix academics with entertainment, so if you catch me reading comics, it’s probably for research! I hope to get my PhD as soon as possible and become an English professor.

As far as hobbies/interests go…

My Focus:

In December of 2013, I will acquire my Masters Degree in Rhetoric and Writing at SDSU, and I acquired my Bachelors Degree at Chapman University.  I am fascinated by the complexity of language and its effects on our lives: language influences the way we think, structures our minds, brings people together, and has the ability to encourage collaboration.  Therefore, it is crucial to understand how language affects our perception of life.  Everyone has an argument to make, and everyone thinks they are right, so if we understand how to scrutinize arguments and evaluate their validity, we intellectually empower ourselves by developing our critical thinking skills.  After all, intellectual empowerment is crucial in a day and age in which we are bombarded by short snippets of information, and people must learn to think for themselves rather than adopt perspectives that are fashionable and in season.  Furthermore, the art of persuasion and the ability to appeal to people through language is a crucial skill that can carry anyone through their life.  Those who are successful got there through hard work and dedication, but an element that is crucial to success is the ability to communicate, persuade, and appeal to others.  I chose the teaching profession because it is important for me to have a positive influence on those within my community, and I am excited to have this opportunity here at Miramar College.

About me:

I was born and raised in Orange County, but I love San Diego and hope to establish myself here.  When I’m not working on my studies, I get out, exercise, and soak up some sun.  I absolutely love to snowboard and mountain bike, and while I used to love to surf, that sport has taken a back seat.

M 3:00 to 6:00

I moved from Washington State to California about eight years ago and have loved every second of my relocation. I'm a fan of sunshine! I attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where I earned a BA in English. The last few years I spent surfing, traveling, climbing and making a living via the outdoor company, Patagonia. I decided to pursue my passion in teaching and writing, and decided to do so through SDSU, where I'm in the second year of an MA in American Literature. I love burritos, espresso, sailboats, and shopping at Anthropologie. I'm excited to be at Miramar and hope I can be a help!

Hello!  I’m Crissy.  I was born and raised near San Francisco in Northern California.  Then headed to the desert (I don’t know why?!) and studied International Business and Spanish at Arizona State University. I’ve always had a thing for language and culture, so I decided to obtain my TEFL certificate and teach English in Costa Rica.  Upon my return to the U.S., I pursued a Master’s in TESOL at Grand Canyon University.  I’ve been working at a small language school in Scottsdale Arizona, instructing all levels of adult ESL learners.  I’m excited to be apart of Miramar and gain some great experiences.  I love being active; hiking, beach, working out, or just hanging with friends.  I also like cooking, music, capoeira, and traveling.

Hi everyone, my name is Brittany and I am from Long Island.  I am currently a graduate student in the TESOL, Literacy, and Culture Program at USD.  Before attending USD, I received a BA in Spanish, Secondary Education.  I spent two summers in Alicante, Spain studying the language and culture.  After completing undergrad I worked as a TA in a preschool.  Aside from school I love to be outdoors. I enjoy the beach, running, bike rides, and most of all, snowboarding.  I am looking forward to working in the lab and learning from everyone!

Hello! My name is Melissa. I am originally from North Carolina. About 2 years ago, I moved to beautiful San Diego. I am currently pursuing an M. Ed. in TESOL, Literacy, and Cultures from USD. Prior to moving across country, I taught kindergarten and 1st grade in Wilmington, NC. I received a BA in Elementary Education from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and also had the opportunity to spend a semester abroad studying in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I have a strong passion for teaching, and have experience educating students of all ages. I am eager to continue to learn in my role as an IA at Miramar this semester. When I am not teaching or in school, I enjoy practicing yoga, playing soccer, traveling the world, and spending time with friends and family.

 W 1:00 to 5:00

My name is Brianna, and I received my Master’s degree from San Diego State University in December 2013. I tutored for two and a half years for the Rhetoric and Writing Studies Department at San Diego State University. Additionally, I taught rhetoric and writing during the 2012-2013 school year and Introduction to Literature in fall 2013. My literature class incorporated confinement as an issue of concern. I enjoy literature of the underdogs because the people who struggle most tend to be the hardest working people in society. I have presented papers on gender and relationships at various different conferences, including two paper presentations in Hawaii in January 2014. I hope to pursue a PhD in literature, so I can become a professor at the college level.

Hobbies: I am a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan, I enjoy cycling (classes) at the gym, and I currently play in two coed softball leagues in San Diego.

Favorite TV shows: Law and Order SVU, Modern Family, Friends, Master Chef, The Voice, Scandal, Parenthood

I very much look forward to working at Miramar this semester!

I would describe myself as both “down to earth” and “save the world”. I am a San Diego native and love the natural beauty and laid back lifestyle it has always offered. I do love interacting with cultures other than so cal, however, and have visited many countries during my career with the airlines. I am also somewhat of a coffee snob, having spent 6+ years running what can only be described as a Starbuck’s on wheels, serving up Fair Trade coffee, making a difference one cup at a time.
Teaching English is my third act, but perhaps my favorite. Earning my Master’s in TESOL through Alliant University in 2009, I recently returned from teaching English in Indonesia.  I am currently  teaching  locally to a wide audience, including students, adults, entrepreneurs and refugees. I am very excited about interacting with and supporting the students at Miramar College on their educational journey.

Hi everyone! My name is Caleigh. I'm originally from eastern North Carolina and moved to San Diego almost 2 years ago. I drove cross-country with nothing but surfboards, clothes, and a coffee pot--it was epic! I earned a Bachelor's degree in English Literature with extensive coursework in Education at University of North Carolina at Wilmington. I'm currently working on a Master's in English and Comparative Literature at San Diego State where I also teach introductory writing courses. When I'm not teaching, reading, or writing, I love surfing, cooking (especially the eating part), travelling, exploring, exercising, daydreaming about puppies, chilling at the beach, and hanging out with friends. I'm really excited about being apart of the team at Miramar and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!

I’m originally from Orange County, but I moved to San Diego almost four years ago to get an MA from SDSU. I also lived in Los Angeles while I was getting my BA at UCLA, so I’m a true so-Cal girl! I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I was about five, so I’ve been working on that goal for a long time. I worked as a tutor in the writing lab at UCLA, as an instructor for a writing class at SDSU, and now I teach international students writing and various other subjects at UCSD. I’m really excited about working with students one-on-one again in the instructional lab.

Besides teaching writing, I also love reading. I visit the local library at least once a month to find something new. My favorite book has always been Pride and Prejudice, but I love so many others that I don’t like picking favorites. I enjoy cooking and experimenting with new recipes, going to concerts, musicals, plays, and Padres games, and all the other great cultural events in San Diego. When I’m not busy, I daydream about getting a dog and going to live on a farm.

I grew up in California and attended a local community college before transferring to SDSU for my BA and MA in English.  Between my BA and MA I lived in Madrid, Spain, teaching English and learning Spanish.  After completing my MA, I spent two years teaching English in Guadalajara, Mexico, where I met my husband, Luis.  We have been married now 20 years!  We have three boys, ages 17, 15, and 12 who attend Challenger Middle School and Mira Mesa High.  I have taught English and ESOL for over 25 years.

Hi, everyone!  I have been working at Miramar since 2011, and I teach ESOL, basic writing, and transfer-level classes.  I earned my Master of Arts in English with options in Rhetoric/Composition and TESL and my Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Language.  I attended Cal Poly Pomona for both, but I am originally from Oceanside so not too far away from Miramar.  I did get to grow up all over the U.S. and Japan because my dad was in the Marine Corps, and I definitely love to travel as a result!  I have been to several places in Europe and Mexico, and I taught English in China for two summers.  When I am not teaching or doing something related to teaching, I love to do yoga, read, jog, hike, and spend time with my family, friends, and cat.

I’m a transplant from the east coast where I earned a BA in literature at University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Once I crossed the Rocky Mountains to attend the University of Montana, I never crossed back. After earning an MFA in writing there, endless sun and addictive fish tacos lured me to the San Diego area. I’ve been teaching at Miramar College sine 2000.  When I’m not teaching or grading, I tend to various creative purists, including cooking, gardening and smashing glass for abstract mosaics (seriously!). I read a lot of non-fiction, watch way too much tv, and my husband and I love camping with our dogs in remote deserts throughout the west.
