SLIFE and Ed Policy

posted Jun 8, 2014, 9:19 AM by Aaron Cuthbert

Recent educational policy legislation has increased the profile of SLIFE at the statewide level. Although this expansion is not as broad as one would hope it nevertheless marks an important growth of awareness within state government of unique SLIFE issues. See below for the relevant sections of legislation as per MDE:

LEAPS Act

posted Apr 24, 2014, 2:29 PM by minneslife@gmail.com   [ updated Apr 26, 2014, 1:55 PM ]

"Right now, the fate of Minnesota children who are learning English depends on where and how they end up in school. The least fortunate languish, falling years behind in classrooms where lessons are spooled out in a language they can’t understand.

Because conventional wisdom has held that students must learn English before they can conquer academics, others attend school in pull-out classrooms. By the time they are “mainstreamed,” they, too, can be years behind."

Minnesota is considering new ELL legislation to reform the way schools approach ELL instruction. The article and the actual text of the bill are worth the read. Please speak up, encourage your legislator to pass this bill and advocate for renewed support for SLIFE students!
