Mission Statement

Mingo Central Comprehensive High School Core Beliefs

 We believe:

  • all students deserve a world-class education by improving teaching and learning for ALL students.
  • each person has value and is worthy of respect; therefore, every member of the learning environment will show respect and responsibility for oneself and others.
  • the purpose of education is to enable students to develop their intellectual, emotional, social, and physical potential within a safe, orderly, free of bullying, nurturing, healthy, structured, clean and drug-free environment.
  • in close, meaningful relationships among students, parents, community, faculty, and administrators enhance the educational process.
  • a rigorous and relevant vertically aligned curriculum, effective teaching, ongoing assessment, and interventions for students not yet proficient must be the focus of all learning programs.
  • increased efforts must be made to improve student attendance rates and reduce the overall student truancy, suspension and juvenile incarceration rates.

Mingo Central High School was formed from the consolidation of Burch, Gilbert, Matewan, and Williamson High Schools. Mingo Central opened its doors to our new students in August 2011. We are a comprehensive 9-12 grade high school on a beautiful 90-acre site along the King Coal Highway overlooking the mountains of Mingo County. It is a 172,535 square foot school building containing approximately 60 classrooms, a commons area seating 488 students, a band room for 80 band members, an auditorium seating 400, and a gymnasium seating 2160 fans. The parking lot can accommodate up to 199 staff members and 311 students.

Mingo Central offers Advance Placement/Dual Credit courses in Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, English, the Arts, and various pre-engineering courses. Besides the state-mandated academic courses, we are able to offer Choral, Band, Ceramics, Painting, Piano, Guitar, Dance, Life Fitness, Weight Lifting and much more. The Career Technical school offers Auto Mechanics, HVAC, Graphic Arts, Pro-Start, Healthcare Occupations, Building and Construction, Welding, and a Pre-Engineering program called Project Lead the Way. Students in the 10th grade will now be able to take their introductory class in their chosen field or they  may choose to take one of the courses as an elective.
