Organisational Health

Key Staff Assistance Programme

This Mind Gliding programme offers more than the traditional management development consultation. This programme offers a personal support service, to help the individual to sustain within his/her managerial role. Aligned with the organisational goals, our approach not only helps the employee, it helps the organisation as a whole.

The value of people in organisations

“People are our greatest asset” has long been a stock phrase in company annual reports.

Despite claims by middle market Chief Executives (CEOs) and Finance Directors (FDs) that investing in people is one of the top two areas of investment that would improve their competitiveness, a Business Insights survey from PricewaterhouseCoopers (April 2006) reveals many business leaders are failing to practice what they preach. The results of this survey highlight the mismatch between rhetoric and reality when it comes to managing and developing their people.

An organisation exist by the (in)formation of a working alliance through relationship by indivividual human beings. This "organic" system may find its purpose through common vision and values. Looking after our "greatest assets" guarantees organisational health. Some obvious challenges in organisational functioning are caused by individual disfunctioning. Although recognised, they stay unchallenged because of ignorance, fear, prejudice and/or other cultural reasons.

"There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance - that principle is contempt prior to investigation." - Herbert Spencer

Alcohol & Chemical dependency

  • Alcohol in the workplace
Absenteeism from work through alcohol misuse costs the economy in the UK about £1.5bn a year.
A survey carried out in December 2007 for Norwich Union Healthcare found a third of employees admitting to having been to work with a hangover. 15% reported having been drunk at work. One in ten employees reported hangovers at work once a month, one in twenty once a week. Work problems resulting from hangovers or being drunk at work included difficulty concentrating; reduced productivity; tiredness and mistakes. The majority (77%) of employers interviewed for this survey identified alcohol as a major threat to employee wellbeing and a factor encouraging sickness absence.

Heavy drinkers stay less long in jobs
The International Labour Organisation estimates that, globally, 3-5% of the average work force are alcohol dependent, and up to 25% drink heavily enough to be at risk of dependence.

  • Alcohol dependency
    What is alcohol dependency?
For most people drinking alcohol is a recreational activity, and the majority of people manage to drink alcohol without incurring any harmful consequences. But to be alcohol dependent means that you feel you need to have a drink to help you through certain situations (For example, some people would not consider socialising without a drink). When those situations include work, then Mind Gliding suggest you call us 01843 296565.

Alcohol dependency or alcohol abuse by yourself or by people around you in your private life will influence your performance at work. If that is the case, contact Dr Kloprogge of Mind Gliding (tel: 01843 296565) to discuss what we can do for you.

  • Recovery from alcohol dependency

    Drug and Alcohol Rehab

  • What to do after you had treatment?
Once you have received professional help for problems with alcohol and you are in rehabilitation, the aftercare might miss the most important reason for you to have gone into treatment in the first place: Your do not want to loose your job! The lack of statistical information of sustainable recovery from treatment centres suggest that there might be a risk involved in relapsing. Mind Gliding has the knowledge and personal experience to minimise this risk through its Key Staff Assisance Programme. If you are a business owner, chief executive or middle/senior manager, and you are in recovery from alcohol abuse, you will benefit from this programme in keeping you on track in your role as a manager. Not only you, but the organisation you work for will also experience these benefits. Call us on 01843 296565 to discuss what we can do for you.

  • Chemical dependency other than from alcohol
Although narcotics can be as harmful or even more harmful than alcohol abuse, tackling this problem is  different. Mind Gliding (in principle) does not work with people who's working lives are influenced by personal use of illegal drugs.
When you have dependency problems with prescribed drugs, than call us on 01843 296565. For those people who's private life is influenced by the use of drugs by others and find themselves in a position of less coping in the working environment, please do not hesitate to call us on 01843 296565.

  • Pseudo competency and Over-promotion

    • The Achillis Syndrome of pseudo competency

Do you worry about other people's opinions of you?

Do you feel fear or panic before you have to perform a task in front of others?

Do you have a reputation for excellence, but still feel you are an incompetent or a fraud?

If you do, you may be suffering from an increasingly common complaint - a crisis of confidence called the 'Achilles Syndrome'. Most of us suffer from it to a degree, experiencing a discrepancy between what we actually achieve and what we think we are capable of. But for some, the complaint can be psychologically crippling, causing severe anxiety and stress.

    • Over-promotion
"When I was first promoted from the rank and file, I struggling mightily with being a newly minted manager. I was written up twice within my first several months for insubordination and failing to carry out managerial directives. That clearly points out how unhappy my boss was with my performance. Unfortunately, my former peers were angry with me too. I had “abandoned” them and wasn’t helping improve their situation." - [Newly appointed senior manager of a global financial organisation]

Both previous examples describe working situations of technically highly qualified people, who lack the knowledge, confidence and/or experience in their role as a (senior)manager.

Mind Gliding combines psychological skills and organisational talent to support people in management positions in developing their managerial potential up to the level they operate in. Please call us on 01843 296565

    Overcome procrastintation

Procrastination, the habit of putting tasks off to the last possible minute, can be a major problem in both your career and your personal life. Missed opportunities, frenzied work hours, stress, overwhelm, resentment, and guilt are just some of the symptoms. Together with our gestalt psychologist you will be able to explore the root causes of your procrastination and give you several practical tools to overcome it. Call us on 01843 296565

    Bullying or being bullied

Unlike the more physical form of schoolyard bullying, workplace bullying often takes place within the established rules and policies of the organisation and society. Such actions are not necessarily illegal and may not even be against the organisation regulations; however, the damage to the targeted employee and to workplace morale is obvious.
Several sources of research show that organisations suffer large financial costs by not accurately managing conflict and bullying type behaviours. Being a bully or being bullied does not positively contribute to organisatonal health. Mind Gliding has expertise and knowledge about how to combat conflict situations like bullying in the workplace.

To discuss any conflict resolution strategies for your organisation, contact Mind Gliding on 01843 296565

Dealing with individual or corporate Stress

Stress is very real, but stress does not always have to been seen as something negative. In fact, stress is a life energy force in the body and is the key ingredient in optimal performance. Positive stress is actually essential and beneficial and can be our strongest ally for leading stimulating healthy lives, filled with vitality and resilience.

    The nature of Stress

When unregulated, uncontrolled or ignored, stress can be harmful to your health and wellbeing; too little stress can lead to apathy, atrophy, fatigue and illness.
A major step toward successful stress management is to find and maintain a personal equilibrium, between the ability to cope and the nature of stress.
However, if you are experiencing "negative" stress, that cause you problems in your role as manager, think twice before you release your stress in a way that might cause more stress than you can handle, like the abuse of alcohol. Call us on 01843 296565.
