Mindfulness means paying attention to what is happening here and now without judgment. Educators are constantly asking students to focus and pay attention but do they teach children how to do this. The practice of mindfulness teaches students how to pay attention. This can improve both the students' academic and social-emotional learning. We live in a world that is full of stress and even our youngest students can feel and have stress. Shannon believes that if educators could start to teach children, at an early age, how to be more aware and mindful then maybe someday the amount of stress (or at the least the way children and adults handle stress) may lessen. Children can feel stress socially, from their home environments, or from the academic pressures placed upon them to succeed. Stress can inhibit our children from learning to the “best” of their abilities. Mindfulness behaviors allow you to focus your attention, to become less reactive, and to be more compassionate with ourselves and others. Shannon believes that by taking a few minutes during each tutoring session to integrate mindfulness strategies like breathing, stretching, listening, and focusing, she is helping students to develop lifelong skills and strategies.
