BRUKER D2 Phaser powder diffractometer 

Funded by SIR 2014 Grant no.RBSI14A1CV (Earth Science Department, University of Pisa) 

Equipped with Cu source and a 1-dimensional LYNXEYE detector, it allows qualitative and quantitative X-ray powder diffraction studies. Owing to the high sensitivity of the detector, the data collection time is reduced from hours to minutes and high-quality X-ray diffraction patterns can be collected using extremely low amounts of sample.Year of acquisition: 2015.



HORIBA XploRA Plus micro-Raman spectrometer 

Funded by SIR 2014 Grant no.RBSI14A1CV (Earth Science Department, University of Pisa) 

Equipped with two laser sources (λ = 532 and 785 nm), it is suitable for the identification of samples using a non-destructive technique, requiring no sample preparation. In addition, it would be possible to examine both crystalline and amorphous compounds. This instrument will allow to obtain accurate data on the mineralogy of the ore deposits as well as of their alteration products. In addition, it would be useful for the study of low-crystalline compounds formed in the acid mine drainage systems. Year of acquisition: 2015.




BRUKER SMART BREEZE single-crystal diffractometer 

Equipped with Mo source and CCD area detector, suitable for identification and crystallographic studies of samples at room temperature. Year of acquisition: 2012.




SIEMENS P4 four-circle single-crystal diffractometer 

Equipped with Mo source and point detector, suitable for identification and crystallographic studies of samples at room temperature and under high temperature conditions. Year of acquisition: 1997.




X-ray powder diffractometer with Bragg-Brentano geometry 

Equipped with Cu source and point detector, suitable for identification of powder samples at room temperature. Year of acquisition: pre-1980.




Gandolfi Camera 

Four Gandolfi cameras, for the collection of X-ray powder diffraction patterns using Cu radiation at room temperature using very low amount of material. It could be equipped with an image-plate detector.




Zeiss Discovery V8 stereomicroscope 

Stereomicroscope for sample examination and preparation. Year of acquisition: 2008. 



Attività del Laboratorio

Vi si svolge la maggior parte delle attività di ricerca del gruppo. Inoltre, vi si svolgono regolarmente le esercitazioni per gli studenti del corso di Mineralogia per Scienze Geologiche e Scienze Naturali e Ambientali, per gli studenti del corso di Analisi Mineralogiche e per quelli del corso di Cristallografia; vi si svolgono infine le tesi di laurea in Mineralogia e Cristallografia e le tesi di Dottorato.

Inoltre possono accedere alle prestazioni del laboratorio anche utenti privati per i seguenti tipi di analisi:

  • Determinazione qualitativa e quantitativa di fasi mineralogiche
  • Determinazione di minerali da micro campioni
  • Determinazione della natura di minerali argillosi
  • Determinazione delle fasi minerali componenti calcoli umani o animali
  • Determinazione della presenza di fasi asbestossiche in materiali coibentanti e manufatti
  • Studio dei materiali litoidi, malte, prodotti di degrado e alterazione nei monumenti
