Join us for Miles in May 2023
Dates:
The 2023 competition dates run from Sunday May 14th through Sunday May 21st. For those looking for airtime beforehand, there will be a practice day on Saturday the 13th.
May 22nd (the holiday Monday) will be a travel day with no flying officially planned.
The Meet:
This is a class "B" meet with race to goal task. Flying over the Alberta Prairies and sometimes even into Saskatchewan. It is a Hang Gliding tow competition, however paragliders are more then welcome to come and join in the fun, provided they arrange their own towing apparatus, driver and scorekeeper. Scores will be tallied daily with flight instruments submitted for recording by the meet scorekeeper. Pilot meetings will be held at home base (Swalwell Community Centre) each morning prior to driving out to the tow site, located just north of Carbon Alberta.
Pilot Requirements:
Current HPAC Membership
Signed waivers
A GPS/Vario with downloadable track log. If you have a unique/dated instrument please ensure that you bring the appropriate cables for download and that it is compatible with a (minimum) Windows 7 operating system.
A towing certification or suitable previous towing experience.
A tow bridal and harness.
It is preferred that pilots have a Spot/In-reach or similar tracking device.
The Facilities:
The meet is based out of the Swalwell Community Centre. This has a large open grass area with firepit, barbecue, and enough room for as many campers/tents as we require.
We will have full access to the Community Centre and its amenities, including showers, washrooms, and kitchen as well as a meeting area.
This is otherwise not a full service camping site (no hookups/power in the camping area). Power is available in the Community centre.
The cost of camping is INCLUDED in the signup fee, so if you are registered and pay for the comp, your accommodations are covered.
Swalwell is a Hamlet (pop. aprox. 100) located aproximately 100 Km's NE of Calgary, with directions easily available through google maps: Swalwell Alberta
Nearby Restaurants are in Carbon, Three Hills, and Drumheller, or you can make use of the facilities in Swalwell to cook your own meals.
Registration:
You will need your HPAC membership and foreign pilots will need a temporary membership.
Fees are $175 (Camping included). This does not include meals, tow fees, or retrieval gas sharing costs.
Payment can be made via e-transfer to :

Towing:
This is a tow meet which employs a variety of pay out systems. Infinity Flight Park will be present again this year with their stationary winch towing system (the Gentle Giant) and we hope to have several truck-style towing rigs on hand as well. Pilots are encouraged to organize themselves into teams of 4 or 5 pilots and a tow system.
Each team is responsible to set up its own launching order, find an operator for their tow system and compensate the owner of the tow system as arranged among their team members. If no tow operator is provided, a member of the team will be required to run the tow system and will be scored his/her average score for the day. One should try their best to gain some pay out towing experience before coming to the meet.
