Ethernet cable testing software - without a Fluke

Crimping your own ethernet cat5 cables can be much cheaper, faster and practical.  It can also lead you to bad cables.  How can you check the quality for your cables?

The correct way is to use a cable certifier, it will cost at least USD$ 1000.  There is really no other way to be 100% sure your cable is good. If the cable isn't perfect, it will also tell just how good or bad the cable is.

Unfortunately most of us can't justify that just for checking an occasional cable connection.

The only other alternatives are to run a bandwidth test and TCP transfer speed test.  If the cable is really bad, it won't trasnsfer data at top speeds.

Alternative software to test the ethernet bandwidth are
iperf
netio

To test effective TCP/IP transfer speed
