A Day In The Life

Sgt Pepper was a groundbreaking album made when the Beatles were at the peak of their creativity, and this song is one of the highlights. I've marked some notes as staccato, but there are some very subtle variations in note length that are crucial to the feel of this bass line. Have a good listen to it when you look at this transcription.

A Little Less Conversation
Great song from Elvis' Vegas period. Funky 16th note bass line that is quite challenging to play.

Canned Heat
Classic Jamiroquai track. One of my favourite bass lines to play - a great workout!

Cucumber Slumber
Weather Report tune featuring Victor Bailey on bass. As this is a chart for use with a band I haven't transcribed all of Victor's fills, but check out his superb playing on this.

Like That

Dave Weckl tune featuring the fantastic Tom Kennedy on bass. Some serious 16th note syncopation in this one.

Palladium
Jaco with Weather Report, need I say more?

Slink
This Vinnie Colaiuta tune has some crazy rhythms going on. Pino Palladino and Neil Stubenhaus both played on this album. Not sure who is on this track, but they sound great.

Spirit of the West
The Yellowjackets with Jimmy Haslip playing some lovely melodic stuff. Good practice for reading leger lines.

Starsky and Hutch
The original version, not to be confused with the James Taylor Quartet version.

Yaleo
Transcription from a live version of this classic Santana track.

Yinnin and Yangin
Victor Wooten plays the head on this. He uses a 'tenor bass' (tuned A-D-G-C). You can get nearly all the notes on a 24 fret bass.

At Long Last Love
Great playing by Ralph Pena. Pena was a west coast bassist in the 50s and 60s who played with many of the top names in jazz including Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz and Frank Sinatra. He would undoubtedly be more well known now were it not for his untimely death at the age of 42. This is taken from a live recording of Sinatra’s sextet that toured Europe in 1962. Good luck with the fill in bar 36!

Too Marvellous For Words
Another of Pena with Sinatra. Great up tempo swinger.

Imagination
More of Pena with Sinatra. This medium swinger has some great triplet fills.

Chicago
And another Pena with Sinatra. Bar 69-74 is a great exercise in alternating between open strings and high positions.

Hysteria
This is a fantastic sixteenth note rock riff played by Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme. He gets a great fuzz bass sound on a Rickenbacker FG4003 played through a big muff distortion pedal.

I Feel For You
Chaka Khan classic with a tasty bassline!

This is a condensed version of the Boston Pops arrangement as performed by Chris Botti, Sy Smith, Keith Lockhart et al, link here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jq9D-BtMZgk
The bass line and melody are played with much variation, I have generally stuck to the original version when notating the melody.

A quick sections only chart for the Brand New Heavies' late 80s acid jazz version of the Maria Muldaur song. The bass line features a partido alto rhythm that funks up rather nicely.
