Responsibilities:
    -Lead Writer
    -Art Director
*also created sprites, sound, and music

'Stack & Deploy' is a real-time card strategy game for the iPhone/iPod Touch OS3.0+. Players must draw cards from their custom decks in order to send units onto the field. Being successful involves combining different types of cards to create specific strategies, all while issuing commands to ultimately destroy their opponent's base. 'Stack & Deploy' features a deck editor that allows players to create their own custom decks, a single-player campaign that lets you unlock new cards as you face strong rivals across different galaxies, and 3G/Wi-Fi multiplayer for those wanting to take on their friends.

Fusing the satisfying nature of trading card games and addictive gameplay of real-time strategy, 'Stack & Deploy' offers an easy to learn yet rich in depth gaming experience. It has received more than 10k downloads in over twenty five different countries, including a 4 out of 5 star overall rating on iTunes, and awarded second place at 2010 UCSC Business Plan Competition.

Writing for Stack & Deploy

While working on Stack & Deploy I received valuable experience working with an incredible team of fellow game designers. With commanders being an important element of gameplay, my job was to craft memorable characters with interesting stories that tied to their special abilities in the game. I also wrote the plot of the game, dialog, in-game descriptions, and the game design document.

The premise of the game is as follows: in the distant future a planet-consuming entity has entered the player's galaxy with the intent of devouring everything, forcing the varying races inhabiting the galaxy to set aside their feuds and unite. The player serves the role of a high commander and must gather a strong group of fighters, ships, and  weapons to defend the galaxy.

The team agreed with my plot because the idea of the player being a commander searching for new ships and weapons fitted perfectly with collecting new cards and building a stronger deck. It also made the player part of the story, which I feel makes the player more engaged into the game. We were inspired by Magic the Gathering's use of different game play styles, conveyed by the five different colors, and so we decided to have five different alien races with unique playing styles as well. I then created  five unique alien races, including their physical presentation as well as their planet and race history, which made the cards more attractive and unique. My serving as Art Director helped us make sure that the visual representation of the commanders resulted in not only visually intriguing but also loyal to the writing and their gameplay abilities/stats.

Below are some examples of commanders in our game with their name, art, abilities, and short bios:

General Bonesteel

(Bonus to attack after each kill)

A high ranking military official whose significant role in defending humanity from invasion attempts by other galaxies have earned him a heroic status. He led a vigorous yet unsuccessful last-resort offense against the Vsedoru just before Earth's annihilation. As one of few decorated military officials that survived the apocalyptic event, Bonesteel declares it his duty to mankind that he sees the destruction of the beast.

Having extensive battle experience coupled with unmatched vigor, Bonesteel swiftly escalates in focus and intensity after each opponent destroyed. He is considered one of the best human fighters alive and despite his age shows no signs of decreasing in stamina and capacity.

Nav'Set

(Ship gains 2 life every attack)

Nav'Set is the second eldest child of Rok'Ai, leading commander of the Revenant. Training under his father and eldest sister, both proven warriors, he has become one of the most dangerous and feared Revenant in the galaxy. Well aware that commanders are willing to pay outstandingly steep fees in exchange for a master Revenant in such perilous times, he serves as a mercenary to anyone willing to pay the coin.

Nav'Set brings to battle one of the Revenant's most effective weapons; a repair system coupled with special siphon cannons. These cannons absorb energy from target ships with each shot, transmitting the stolen power to a fast-acting repair system on his own ship. Like all high-level Revenant weaponry, chief Revenant engineer Rida'Na created this system out of stolen data and resources.

Frost Corporal Arjen Felds

(Captures resource nodes faster but can't capture draw nodes)

A dedicated pilot previously on duty for Operation: Deep Frost. Having graduated the academy with high honors, Arjen promptly volunteered for Deep Frost when his scientist wife was requested to replace lost personnel on the ice moon Nayok. He is partners with childhood friend Chris Saitou and together are the most effective unit in Deep Frost, both ranking up to Frost Corporal just before the destruction of Earth. His rich enthusiasm and optimistic persona brings a touch of cheerful color among friends even in the darkest times.

He decides to join Chris in search of any groups with the intention of destroying the beast threatening the galaxy. With seeking skills acutely sharpened from his work during Deep Frost, Arjen is able to scout for resources on nodes at an impressive rate.

Rem'Ik

(Adds burning to attacks)

A fierce and respected fighter, Rem'Ik was captured several years before returning to the Revenant with the desire to serve as a mercenary. Caught by the Scyrul, a zealous race with strong beliefs in justice, Rem'Ik was kept prisoner and tortured for the many raids and atrocities he was known to have lead under the Revenant. Agreeing that he had paid for his crimes and believing that death is not for them to use as a penalty, the Scyrul released him back to the Revenant. Once having an exuberant, enthusiastic personality, Rem'Ik now showed signs of uncontrollable ferocity and derangement.

Though exceedingly maniacal, he is still a capable commander with no care for money but simply a great desire for carnage. In battle he always uses powerful incendiary ammunition developed by Rida'Na. Only when torching his enemies and watching them melt in an agonizing blaze does he now find pleasure and amusement.

Frost Corporal Chris Saitou

(+4 AP for every node you control)

A pilot in Operation: Deep Frost who has proven himself highly formidable on Nayok. On duty when Earth was destroyed, Chris survived mankind's near-annihilation but lost his long-time girlfriend. Severely outraged, he has since then adopted a bitter, resentful persona from his once carefree self. He immediately began seeking for groups planning to destroy the invading beast, convincing his friend and Frost partner Arjen to join him.

He wears a memento of his wife, a white bandana around his arm, for encouragement and as a reminder of why he fights.
