A Financial Note From the DE

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” MATTHEW 6:21-23

I found a treasure when I was called to be the DE of Middle PA District.  I guess I always knew it was there.  But I never knew how valuable it was until now.  That treasure is the church: more specifically that part of the Body of Christ we call the Middle PA District.  I wish you could see the church from my perspective and see the beauty and the devotion I witness whenever I visit our congregations.  I wish you could feel the breath of the Holy Spirit moving when I hear the passion our churches have for the Good News of Jesus Christ.  I wish you could sense how much they love our Lord Jesus Christ.  I never cease to be humbled when I realize that every one of our congregations is part of God’s plan to save and bring wholeness to the world.  Such is the privilege I have in visiting our various churches week in and week out.

It not only humbles me.  It brings a sense of urgency to what we are called to do as a district.  The Middle PA District is called to be a resource for our churches: to help each church be “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world” MATTHEW 5:13-14. We do that by nurturing our 15 ministers in training and by filling pastoral vacancies.  We do that by planning a “Calling the Called” event for 2020, which will be a cooperative effort with neighboring districts to invite persons to an intentional time set apart to consider God’s hand upon their life, perhaps leading them to a commitment to serve God’s people in the ministry.  We do that through continued training and support of our ministers, through continuing education events, implementation of calling cohort groups, ministry formation meetings, scholarships, and guidance in COB approved educational tracks.  We are strengthening our congregations through the revitalization of our District Shalom TeamWe continue our district mission efforts here in the Middle PA District through the work done by our Disaster Team, Trucker Traveler Ministry in Breezewood, Centre Peace prison ministry, and the Chaplain in the Park state park ministry program.  We support congregations in need through our Small Church Fund and our Outreach Ministry Matching Grant Fund.

Middle PA District, that is just some of what we are doing together. It is our gospel partnership and the treasure we possess, we distribute, and that we are.  It takes money to do what we do as a district.  We count on your financial support to continue this mission to be salt and light.  My sense of urgency comes as some new form of violence and evil seems to manifest itself in society each day.  People need Jesus Christ and they need him now.  Such is the treasure we maintain:  not just for ourselves, but for a hate-filled violent world.  Our

treasure is Jesus, who loves this broken world.  Join with us as we show the world our treasure.
