Summary

Hand evaluation

Determine distribution points as follows:

1.   add length of two longest suits

2.   divide by three, rounding down

3.   subtract the length of shortest suit

 

Add to this the standard HCP points (A=4, K=3, Q=2, J=1) this is CV (Complete Value)

 

Divide by three, rounding normal, this gives the number of tricks for the hand.

E.g. 11/12/13 total points gives [4] tricks.

A hand promissing [4] tricks, e.g. opening, also promises 3 (tricks - 1) controls (A=2 and K=1 control).

Notation: [4] is 4 tricks, 3 controls; [4+] is 4 tricks, 4 controls (1 extra over minimum);

[4++] = 4 tricks 5 controls etc.

Corrections:

Add 1 trick for every card over 7 in combined trump length,

e.g. partner opens 1H (5card, [4-6] tricks:

is [3] tricks, plus 1 for 8 card trump fit is [4] tricks, but only 2 controls so hand value is [4-]

With a 5-5 fit, subtract 1 trick.

 

With a singleton or void in partner’s suit: subtract 1 trick.

 

Good-N = N+1, meaning a good 4 card (AKQx) is considered a 5card, etc.

 

No splinters!

Double tends to be penalty, except of 1C/D opening: negative dbl thru 3S.
