Middlesex Canal Curriculum Project

This curriculum was designed to be a program that helps bring local history to life in the elementary classroom.

The 19th Century featured the development and growth of many forms of transportation. The Middlesex Canal provided the transportation connection between the Merrimack River and Charles River during the early part of the nineteenth century. During that time, the canal successfully linked Boston Harbor with the Merrimack River and allowed for traffic of people and goods.

This curriculum was written for grade three, but can easily be adapted.  The curriculum follows the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks in the following areas:
  • English Language Arts
  • History and Social Science
  • Science and Technology/Engineering
The Middlesex Canal Curriculum Project was made possible through the support of the JMR Barker Foundation, the Middlesex Canal Association, and the Wilmington Public Schools.
