Future

Many authorities have reviewed provision in three-tier areas in recent years, with some reviews in place at present. The following changes have either already been approved, or have been proposed over coming years:

Summer 2019

  • Bedford - 2 Middle schools due to close
  • Northumberland - 2 Middle schools due to close/reorganise

With current proposals, there will be around 4 fewer Middle Schools, leaving around 110 schools nationally. Of these, only 5 would be deemed-primary.

(Closures in previous years were as follows:
48 in 2007; 29 in 2008; 6 in 2009; 33 in 2010; 31 in 2011; 16 in 2012; 27 in 2013; 8 in 2014; 16 in 2015; 11 in 2016; 12 in 2017; 7 in 2018)
