About Michael Glaveys

The Michael Glavey G.A.A Club serves Ballinlough,Cloonfad,Granlahan, and the following families in Gorthaganny-Earley,Hurley,Gorman,Daly, & Morris. Michael Glavey’s is seen as one of Roscommon county’s traditional Club’s, despite its rather late formation in 1956. The Club was formed in January 1956, in Gorthaganny, by Peadar Earley.N.T (RIP)

The Club’s first Title was the U-15 County Championship, back in 1963.The Michael Glaveys Club dominated the Intermediate ranks in the early seventies when it won the League in 1970,1971,and again in 1972,as well as been successful in the Intermediate Championship in 1970 and 1972.

Glavey’s originally covered a large area taking in two Parishes-Loughglynn and Kiltullagh, but due to the vast geographical area, the Loughglynn Parish decided to form their own Club, Eire Ōg in 1984. An official by-law was agreed at County Board in 1992, to cover off border areas between Parishes.

The Parish Rule as defined in R.6.8 T.O.2010, shall be in force in the county, subject to the following reservations and the overall authority of the Co. Committee:

(a)The following Parishes shall be subject to all rules and bye-laws governing individual Parishes-Taughmaconnell/Moore/Creagh Rural/Fairymount/Frenchpark.

(b) The Parish Rule shall apply to Kiltullagh /Loughglynn,subject to the following exception. In the case of the Gorthaganny Area, it shall be subject to the conditions contained in the agreement approved by the Co. Committee on June 9th,1992 and recorded in the Minutes.

2015-

The present panel of Intermediate Players  created a new history for the Club.  Many of the Panel have won Underage County Titles over the past number of years,- 2005, 2007, 2009- Double Titles, 2014, 2015- Double Titles & an U-21 Div.2 Championship Title in 2012.  Successes with College Teams were also to the fore for many of the current team.

2015 saw the Club return to the Intermediate ranks for Championship after an absence of 30 years.  The Team & Management through talent, hard-work and determination, exceeded all expectations, by becoming Intermediate County Championship winners after just 12 months, which surely must be a double record-youngest Team & shortest duration to enter & depart a Grade.  The 2014 Management opted to remain to steer the Michael Glavey Intermediate Team through new waters.  The transition was seamless. Rounds: Ml. Glaveys(1-18) V St. Barrys(1-09); Ml.Glaveys(1-09) V Clann na nGael (B) (2-06); Ml. Glaveys(3-24)V St.Ronans(1-03); Ml. Glaveys(1-13) V Kilbride(0-06); Ml. Glaveys(1-11) V Éire Óg(1-10);Quarter Final: Ml. Glaveys (2-10) V St. Dominics (0-15), Semi-Final- Ml. Glaveys(0-13) V Tulsk Lord Edwards(1-09).

Sunday the 4th October 2015 will be a day that the Michael Glavey Club will always remember, the day their Club secured the Intermediate County Championship after 12 short months in the Intermediate ranks.  Strokestown GAA Pitch was the venue, Fuerty the opposition & the Michael Glavey Intermediate Team were the following: Rory Mannion, Patrick Morris, Shane O’ Malley (Captain), David Frayne, James Brennan, Darren O’ Malley (0-01, a 45 winning score), Gary Patterson, John Finan, Caoileann Fitzmaurice(1-01), Conor Hussey ,Sean Burke(1-00),Seamus Burke, Shane Fagan, Andrew Glennon(1-02),Stephen Comer(0-04). Subs. Used-Cian Ruane, Neil Morris, & Tiernan Murphy.  Panel: David Hussey, Tommy Keane, Gerry Cunningham, Cormac Costello, Ronan Murphy, Sean Markham, Luke McDermott, Andrew Morris, Martin Nevin, Daire Markham, Liam Coll, & Liam Cregg.

It was a game of two halves, with a strong start from Fuerty, whose game went very much to plan in the
first half. Andy Glennon scored Michael Glaveys first score of the game. A well executed point which settled the side. The half time score of 1-03 to 1-09, saw the Glavey side trail by 6 points.

With the prevailing winds at their back in the second half, a determined Glaveys side returned with it all to do. Michael Glaveys worked hard and a combined team effort saw the score deficit between the teams lessen. Both teams playing for all they were worth & both teams hoping to capture the Jamsie Murray Intermediate Cup. In the 45th minute, a goal chance taken by the diligent midfielder Caoileann Fitzmaurice, as the result of a free, saw Michael Glavey’s equalize with Fuerty.

Stephen Comer received a great pass from Conor Hussey (Man of the Match) and saw the chance to put his side in the lead with a great pint. The dream was alive and hope prevailed. Fuerty were denied the chance to respond by goalkeeper Rory Mannion, who did great work to keep his side in a leading position.

A 40 metre free for Fuerty saw both sides level once again. A great effort from substitute Cian Ruane, in Glaveys next attack was deflected out for a 45, which saw Darren O’ Malley (2015 Roscommon Senior County Goal-Keeper) save the day, with a wonderful and very timely and accurate point. The Final whistle blew and Michael Glaveys Intermediate Team, having worked as a cohesive unit, were the victors and after a long absence would return to the Senior Championship ranks for 2016. Final score (3-08) to (1-13).

There were many great individual performances from the Glavey side throughout the game. The team put their Club Motto into practice & reaped the benefit for doing so-Ní neart le cur le chéile. (There is no strength without working together).

Team & Management played the AIB Club 2015 Connacht Intermediate Championship Semi-Final in Dr. Hyde Park, Roscommon on Sunday 1st November @ 3.00pm. Conditions were ideal weather wise. The Galway County Champions were Moycullen who were the favourites to win on the day and the more experienced side by far. It was not to be our time. Injuries for the following players Caoileann Fitzmaurice, Sean Markham, & Cormac Costello were significant to the side.  Final score was 2-16 to 2-07.Despite a loss on the day, the experience of playing a former Senior Team, was of great benefit for the Team, and the opportunity to play in home County Grounds for a Team so young, was a unique experience. Support was in abundance.
