Research Techniques Facility (RTF) Workshop:
The workshop is offered twice a year (in the fall and spring
semesters) to Manhattan Hunter Science High School students
(sophomores and a few freshmen). The workshop is hosted by Hunter
College Department of Biological Sciences and funded by Howard Hughes
Medical Institute (HHMI). Every Spring and Fall semester since 2005,
Hunter-HHMI brings about 9 sophomores from Manhattan Hunter Science
High School to Hunter College for a semester long after-school RTF
workshop. The workshop provides training on how to use basic lab tools
and equipments such as pipette, micropipette, centrifuge, pH meter,
spectrophotometer, etc. Students also learn basic lab techniques such
as making a solution, dilution, and running the gel. In addition to
hands-on work, students also research about modern techniques used in
biomedical research labs and give a PowerPoint presentation to the
department of biological sciences at the end of the workshop. The main
purpose of this workshop is to prepare students with their lab
techniques and scientific knowledge so that they can enter a "real"
biomedical research laboratory with confidence. Each summer, we select
5 best students to work in a Hunter's faculty lab as summer research
Students interested in the program should contact Aung Pyie, RTF Director, Tel: 212-772-5283
