Low Vision Devices

Sometimes a patient tells me, "I just want better glasses." Unfortunately, with permanent vision loss, most individuals need additional devices-to provide magnification, contrast, and/or glare control. There are many devices available to meet patients’ needs. During the low vision exam I may trial multiple devices depending on the individual's needs and goals, visual functioning, physical limitations and personal preferences.

Some of these include:
  • High powered reading glasses
  • Lighted hand-held magnifiers or stand magnifiers
  • Video magnifiers (handheld or desktop)
  • Telescopes or binoculars mounted into the patient's prescription glasses
  • Telescopes for sighting street signs.
  • TV glasses
  • UV blocking sunglasses to minimize glare discomfort and improve contrast
