This page is dedicated to the memory of my Grandmother Mrs. Meazagenet Hailemariam-- May you rest in Peace- (1897-1985 Ethiopian Calendar)
These pages are taken from papers that I found in my grandma's closet and contain letters of correspondences between Emperor Menelik, Empress Taitu and her grandfather, Dejazmach Meshesha Worke.
(c. 1849–c. 1917) was an Ethiopian dignitary, army commander, and diplomat who served Emperor Menelik II.
Life and career
Early life: Born to Afä Nəgus Wärqe in the mid-19th century, Meshesha Worke began his career at the court of Emperor Tewodros II at the fortress of Mäqdäla.
Aide to Menelik II: After Tewodros II’s death, Meshesha Worke allied himself with Menelik II, whom he had met as a fellow courtier in Mäqdäla. He became a devoted and influential general for Menelik II, who rose to become emperor.
Conspiracy and pardon: Meshesha Worke was at one point involved in a conspiracy against Menelik but was pardoned after appeals from other nobles. He then returned to his position of favor.
Diplomatic service: Meshesha Worke was entrusted with leading several diplomatic missions abroad.
