Major Arcana‎ > ‎

01 - The Magician

The Magician is noted for both creation - making things happen via manifestation of willpower - and for trickery and slight of hand. The Magician manipulates the elements to suit his ends, but will also manipulate the people around him just as easily. The Magician is the card of skill and communication, of bringing ideas to fruition in reality and bringing reality into the abstract. Where the Fool has the potential for Light and Dark, the Magician depends on bringing the two forces together.

In many decks, the Magician is the only trump card to reference the Minor Arcana by depicting the suits (usually cups, swords, staves/wands, and pentacles/coins) as tools he uses. I wanted to do something like that, but because I have no concrete plans for the Minor Arcana I decided to hold off for now. Maybe one day I will come back and edit this card or create a new one with all the suits depicted inside it.

I picked Merlin to be the magician not because of his magic but because of what he does in the show - on one hand, he will manipulate the elements to do magic and save Camelot. On the other hand, even if by necessity only, he has to manipulate everyone around him for his purposes. For the most part, though, he was chosen because of the way he brings ideas into fruition - he works every day to bring the abstract concept of Albion just a little closer to reality by helping Arthur become a good king, and thus able to bring about a golden age Merlin so strongly desires. He takes the hope for a better future and finds someone to manifest it every day, and this proverbial changing of Heavens to Earth is what makes Merlin the magician, not his magic.
