Meridith McNeal current work

I call the most recent trajectory of my Windowphilia series (life-sized ink and watercolor paintings of windows on paper) Inside/Outside Windowphilia.

What tantalizes within each are the glances: what lies just outside the frame, around the corner or over the viewer’s shoulder. Every shop window contains not only its goods but the ghost of an observer. Every window that looks out onto a courtyard or cityscape also holds, suspended, something of the viewer and the room from which they watch.

Most of all, these paintings—these windows, these stories—remind us to make no assumptions about on which side of the frame we stand. My windows illuminate in all senses of the word; they are conduits of light, vision—and knowledge.

Magical Things, my ongoing series of watercolors, venerate the easily overlooked objects of everyday life: a paperback novel, a thermos, a doorknob.  Mundane objects become totems, Milagros—charms of mindfulness, imbued with a power greater than the sum of their parts.   These are a few samples from my trip to Italy in June 2019.
