ANCIENT SPARTA vs. ANCIENT ATHENS

By Julia Dempster

12/11/98

Way back when,
When Greece was the word
There were two rival city-states,
That thought each other absurd.

The first was Athens
With the strongest navy
Their government
Was a Democracy.

The other was Sparta
With the strongest army.
Their government
Was an Oligarchy.

In the beginning days of Sparta,
The people needed more land.
So they marched over to Messenia,
And took them under command.

Men and Women in Sparta
Had to train hard and long,

Because Sparta’s goal

Was to be military strong.

This is how they came to be known
Mean and warlike in every way.

They are still remembered as brutal.

Even to this day.

Athens started out different,
They were farmers that were poor.

They did not intend one single bit

To fight in any war.

Athens was known as sophisticated,
And graceful in every way.

But other city-states mocked them,

And through many attacks made them pay.

Women in Athens
Barely had a right.
When their husbands friends were over,
She had to stay out of sight.

Women in Athens
Could not go out alone.
They had to educate the children,
And manage the home.

Now, women in Sparta,
Had a lot of rights,
They enjoyed wrestling and racing
But couldn’t join in any fights.

Even though Sparta and Athens
Were in the same place.
They will always be historic rivals.
And in each other’s face.
