Why Meditate? Life on earth includes physical, mental, and emotional suffering. By calming our mind (in shamata meditation) we are able to gain some peace and thus reduce our suffering. For the short-term view, this leads to more happiness in our lives. For the long-term view, shamata meditation sets the foundation for insight meditation, in which we examine our mind and work on changing our attitudes and emotions. These two types of meditation are crucial for reaching enlightenment.
May all beings have happiness and the root of happiness.
May they be free from suffering and the root of suffering.
May they never be separated from the highest bliss, which is without suffering.
May they come to rest in great impartiality,
Which is free from attachment and aversion to those near and far.
