Scope
This workshop showcases emerging work and ideas on crime and justice in the "global south". We will also talk about theory and theory-building in connection to evolving state/non-state actors, functions, and citizen demands.

Approach
The workshop opens with the topic of new voices: On Oct. 11th we will screen two new documentaries reflecting on varying forms of punishment and justice: Tunisia: Justice in Transition (2017, 75 min), on courts and regime change, and "The only way out is through Jesus’: The El Salvador pastors saving MS-13 gang members (2018, 13 min), on strategies of redemption and rehabilitation. After the screening we will have a public conversation with films' story-makers and other featured speakers.
The first full day of talks will be centered on measures - panels will address issues related to method, fieldwork and knowledge production in Latin America and beyond. The guiding theme for the second day is meanings, and it will feature contributions on key substantive questions --punishment, accountability, identity-- and related strategies to galvanize change.
All panels involve two or three presentations and/or a invited discussant, and ample time for questions/follow-up. Most activities will be conducted in English, although some talks may be presented in Spanish or Portuguese (with English-translated slides and handouts but no simultaneous interpretation).
Dissemination
Conference presentations and short summaries of panel discussions will be posted here. During the workshop we will explore whether contributions made in full paper format can be grouped for publication consideration as an edited volume, or as part of a special-issue journal.
Conference presentations will also be streamed live, and uploaded for web-playing in a dedicated channel of youtube.com. To watch the livestream of the talks on October 12, click here. For the talks on October 13, click here.
