Wessels Gat with Wulf Eilers, 17 March 2013

It is that time of the year for a hike to Wesselsgat, an old favourite, billed as a gentle kloofing trip for beginners. There are nine of us that can enjoy the kind weather and wonderfully warm water. Apart from struggling to find the right route down to the river – fighting through overgrown vegetation – there are no mishaps or heroics. Sadly the old picnic spot at the big pool (and emergency exit) is so overgrown and unsuitable for a proper lunch break. Even the inexperienced enjoy the exhilaration, great outdoors and each others’ company. We wonder why people we meet on Mountain Club hikes are always such nice people – it must be a shared awe of the natural beauty around us.
