This web site provides various forms of information relating to the racial history of Monterey County on the central coast of California. This information includes:
  • Population data broken down by race for different locations within the county from before European conquest of the area to the present time.
  • A chronology of selected county, state, and national historical documents that can help us understand why and how non-white racial groups were accorded inferior civil status and unequal rights in the area, and how those rights have evolved over time.
  • A bibliography of county and state written histories that either tell the aggregate story of the area, or which focus more narrowly on the histories of Native Indians, Hispanics, African Americans, Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans, or Filipino Americans.
  • A comparison of the socio-economic-educational well-being of different racial groups within Monterey County in the present time.
