Variety Show Planning Meeting Tuesday, Jan. 26 @5:30 – Auditions Feb. 1 & 2.

The Little Bit of Somethin’ Community Variety Show is on Tuesday, April 5, 2016.  The LBS is a celebration of the wonderful talent of the McKinley family – students, teachers, parents and community members.  It is our largest fundraiser for McKinley Arts and helps maintain our auditorium, repair instruments, purchase music and bring in clinicians to help the band and all music ensembles.  There will be a planning meeting for all those interested in helping make our show a huge success on Tuesday, Jan. 26 @ 5:30 p.m. in the Band Room.

Auditions will be on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 1 & 2 in the auditorium.  Sign-up sheets are outside the vocal music room.

7/8 Trip to WHS a huge success

The 7th and 8th grade bands got to visit Washington High School, play with the high school band and learn about all their opportunities for High School.

8th Grade students are beginning the registration process for high school.  Some important dates:

January 22nd – 6th hour. High School Counselors will be presenting to all 8th graders about classes and activities at Wash.

January 27th and 29th (full days) – Counselors will be going through IHAPI (I Have A Plan Iowa) curriculum with all 8th grade students. They will be going in alphabetical order and talk about 4-year plans for high school.

February 2nd – Freshman night at Washington High School 6:30 pm

February 16th and 17th – class registration.

HyVee Receipts Contest

All First hour classes are competing now through Feb. 19 to bring in most receipts per grade.  If you have those saved up on your counter, bring them in!  Every little bit helps – the HyVee receipts contest purchased the Smart Board for the Choir room – so every little bit helps!

January 8, 2016

  • Semester 1 Ends Friday, Jan. 15

Next week is the last week of the first semester.  Be sure to check your student’s PowerSchool by clicking on the “Standards Grade” tab.  Any X’s (no evidence) or U’s (minimal understanding) mean that your child is missing work, or needs extra practice on a skill.

I also have an 8th grader and a 10th grader.  I went on my children’s powerschool and noticed that my son had a few missing assignments.  If your child claims they left their assignment at school (as my son did), many times they are available on Canvas to download.  We went on canvas, clicked the assignment in the calendar and Voila! Can get your assignment done at home!!!  Your child should know how to do this – but if you need help, please email me eldriskell@cr.k12.ia.us.  We will be creating a new lesson schedule for Semester 2.  Please let me know if there is a class your child cannot miss.

7/8 WHS Band Festival Jan 20

Your 7th & 8th grader received a permission form for the Washington Band Festival on Jan. 20.  This is a fantastic opportunity for your child to learn more about being in band in High School.  Additional permission forms can be found on Canvas or by clicking here:  WHS Band Festival Permission

Of course, I’m going to tell you that being in Marching Band is the best activity your child can join in high school, but here is an article that a band parent wrote as why band, and marching band in particular, is the best extra-curricular activity at the school:  Why Band is the best activity

Best quote from the article, But if I had an eighth-grader who was worried about making friends and nervous about high school, I’d be encouraging that child to give marching band a hard look.”

McKinley/Franklin Pep Band at the Roughriders on Jan. 29

Another form went home this week for students to participate in the Roughriders Pep Band on Jan. 29.  This is open to all students in grades 6, 7, 8 who have no X’s or U’s on their Semester 1 report card (see first bullet point!!!)

Details can be found here:  Roughriders Permission Form

Students will not need a ticket.  I will need a limited number of parent chaperones to help with the event.  Please return the form if you are interested.

If you want to just enjoy the event and support McKinley, you can order tickets for you and your family.   The Roughriders are donating a portion of the ticket sales to the Band, so please share with your friends and family!  Ticket order form is here:  Fundraiser ticket order form

Little Bit of Somethin’ Community Variety Show – Auditions soon!

The LBS Community Variety Show will be on Tuesday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m.  It has been a McKinley tradition stretching back to the 1970’s.  Students, parents, family members, friends and neighbors are encouraged to audition.  This is our biggest fundraiser for the Music department and has helped purchase equipment for the auditorium, repair instruments and support guest clinicians that benefit all students.

The auditions will be held on Tuesday and Thursday, Feb. 2 & 4 after school.

We need lots of parents to help behind the scenes.  Keep on the lookout on how you can be involved!

Have a wonderful weekend!

7th Grade Plays for Elementary Schools

On Friday, April 17, the 7th grade band performed for Erskine, Johnson and Grant Wood Schools.  They did a fantastic job of encouraging 5th graders to join band and representing the McKinley Band in their performances as well as at Planet X.   Thank you Mr. McDermott and Mrs. Reilly for serving as chaperones/roadies.  Pictures to come!

    Recruiting has begun

Do you remember when your child was in 5th grade and deciding to join band?  It was probably one of the best decisions you ever made – playing music is something that will bring you great joy for your entire life.  Now the 5th graders are ready to embark on their journey of discovery.

I will be visiting the elementary schools next week to test-drive instruments.  May 18 is the 5th grade registration night.

Special thanks to the 6th grade ensembles who played for the schools who visited McKinley this week – 6th Grade Brass Club, 6th grade clarinet trio (Jasmine Holladay, Ian Wolverton-Weiss, Ty Metzger) and 6th grade clarinet duet (Jaeden Ray and Olivia Parsons).

8th Grade Adventureland forms due Friday

The 8th grade band has been working hard preparing for their performance at Adventureland on Saturday, May 2.  Permission forms are due Friday.  Please let Mrs. Driskell know if you have any questions eldriskell@cr.k12.ia.us

Jazz Band featured Lobby Band at Titan’s Pregame

The Jazz Band will be performing as part of the pregame entertainment this Saturday at the Titans.  We will play on the concourse at 6 p.m. and enjoy the game afterward.

    Congratulations Coe Honor Band

Four McKinley Band members performed at the Coe College Honor Bands this weekend.  Olivia Parsons (clarinet) and Megan Bennett (trumpet) performed on Saturday with the elementary honor band.  Lewis Kleman (percussion) and Anneli Vorhies (oboe) performed on Sunday with the intermediare honor band.  Congratulations!

Easy to go Green in Band

Today’s Earth Day celebration encouraged teachers to turn off the lights and computers.  It was easy for us to do in band – our instruments don’t need electricity and there was plenty of natural light coming through the windows.  Our instruments were invented way before Thomas Edison created the light bulb and will be around for many years to come.

    Spring Concert – May 12

    6th grade at 6:30 p.m.

    7th/8th & Jazz at 7:30 p.m.

Have a great rest of your week.

Dear McKinley Families and Faculty,

We have many students that are participating in the City Solo and Ensemble Festival on Saturday, April 11 at Kennedy High School.  Below is the schedule for Band students indicating the instrument on which they are performing either a solo or in an ensemble.  Admission is free and each student/ensemble has a time limit of 2 ½ - 6 minutes to perform, which allows the listener to visit and hear several different performances.

  • The students as they make strong progress toward their performances;

  • The many private teachers that work with these students throughout the year;

  • Our accompanist, Miss Lodge, who has been working with the students to prepare and will be performing with the students for their solos;

  • And the Parents that support these opportunities and their students music education.

Some Reminders:

  1. Arrive at Kennedy High School 1 hour before you are scheduled to perform (7:30 a.m. the earliest).  Parking is at a premium.  Warm-up carefully in the gym and do not play too much.  Make sure you have your instrument and music – McKinley will not be open Saturday.

  2. Mrs. Driskell has your judge’s copy and will give it to you on Saturday.

  3. Dress up!  Wear your best set of clothes or McKinley Band uniform.  Nice clothes and dress shoes make a better first impression.

  4. Miss Lodge is on a tight schedule.  Wait patiently for her.  DO NOT PERFORM WITHOUT YOUR PIANO ACCOMPANIST!  If you are performing in a group, please try to tune yourselves in case Mrs. Driskell isn’t able to meet with you before you play.

  5. The gym is the homeroom and warm-up room.  6th Grade Brass club will meet there at 12:30 for our 1 p.m. performance in the Auditorium.  7/8 percussion ensemble will meet in the percussion warm-up room at 1:30.

  6. Go hear other students play.  Offer your encouragement to others from McKinley to do their best.  You are encouraged to clap when a performance is finished.  Be polite, respectful and clap when a performance is done.  As always, conduct yourselves with class.  Remember, you are representing the McKinley music department.

We look forward to hearing many outstanding performances on Saturday!  Good Luck!

    Hello Band Families,

Brrrr…. Oh have we had a brisk start to 2015!  This has been a tricky week with lessons.  When the schedule changes during late starts, there are no band lessons.  Please be sure to keep practicing at home – what a great use of our extra time!

    Winter Weather Reminders

Do NOT leave instruments in cold vehicles during this sub-zero weather.  Just like people can get frostbite, brass becomes unsoldered and wood cracks.  If I have my instrument in my car and need to stop by the store, I take it with me inside.  Please be careful!

Variety Show Parent Meeting on Tuesday, 1/13 6-6:30 p.m.

This is a make-up meeting.  We need help planning, publicizing and making this show a huge success!  For more details, contact Jenny Holderness jenny.holderness@transamerica.com.

Quarter 2 ends on Friday 1/16

It hardly seems that we’re back at school, but there will be a report card coming out a week from today.  Please keep on top of your children’s powerschool grade.  If you see an “x” by any assignment in band, it means it is missing and needs to be made up.  During the week of 1/13, students can sign up for a time to come in during EL or after school to get assignments checked off.

    Parent/Teacher Conferences 1/20 & 1/22

Band Conferences will be a playing conference.  Students will play and parents can listen to their child’s progress.  I’ve found when a parent hears how their child plays during a lesson, it explains exactly how their child is doing in class.  Since I only have 80 time slots, please allow other families to sign up first if your child had a conference lesson in the fall.  The sign up link is:  Conference Sign-up
