Congratulations to Mckay Jazz Band  on receiving 2nd Place in Group II at the 45th Annual Festival of Jazz at the University of Portland.

Congratulations to Mckay Royal Guardsmen Marching Band and Color Guard. Receiving 2nd place in the single A class out of 12 bands. They also received 6th place over all out of 18 bands in the Finals at the University of Oregon's 31st annual Festival of Bands held on 10th of October.


Congratulations Mckay Royal Guardsmen Marching Band and Color Guard. Receiving 3rd place in the single A class out of 6 bands.  They also received the award for High Music in their class at the Pacific Coast Invitational Marching Band Competition held at Sprague High School October 3rd




Our Band Director, Mr. Samuel Hankins, comes from a musical family. His maternal grandmother played the piano and was a tremendous gospel singer, his brother plays the piano and major in voice and teach elementary general music k_5th, his father played harmonica and vocals in various R&B bands. So it was inevitable that Mr. Hankins musical education would begin at an early age. Encourage by his father, Samuel began with the guitar. In middle school he switched to the trumpet. Again, encouraged by his father, Mr Hankins began playing professionally, in churches and professional bands and orchestras.

Mr. Hankins attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance. He became Active in College joining the distinguish men of Alpha Phi Alpah Fraternity. After college he joined the Air Force Jazz Band, The Pacesetters, stationed at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois. He remained with the Pacesetters as a trumpeter until the Air Force Base closed in 1991. Mr. Hankins then returned to school, earning both a Bachelors Degree and a Masters Degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

As a Trumpet player, Mr. Hankins has performed and recorded with many bands: big band such as Glenn Miller big band, Clark Terry, circus bands, funk bands, cruise ships, combos, and commercial recording sessions. He has performed with pop artist groups such as the Ojays, Aretha Franklin, Temptation, and the Dells. Armed with this impressive array of degrees, experience, and credentials, Mr. Hankins accepted the position of Band Director at Edsiosn Middle School in September 1995-2006. After leaving Edison Mr. Hankins accepted an International teaching band position in the country of Burmuda for 2 years. While in the country Burmuda Mr. Hankins job was bring and putting a band program together, while there he started a concert band and jazz band and played as a professional trumpet player.

We have an exciting year ahead of us led by our new Band Director, Mr. Samuel Hankins. He comes all the way from Illinois with many goals for the McKay High School Band.
