Caption your videos!

posted Apr 19, 2013, 1:48 PM by Ashley AR Chelonis

Use Camtasia, offered in the Staff Resource Center, Windows Live Movie Maker, or the DECT grant to caption your videos over the summer! It is a legal requirement that all instructors show captioned videos in their online and on-ground courses.

Camtasia and Windows Live Movie Maker let you caption on your own. Windows Live Movie Maker comes standard on most PCs with Windows 7. Camtasia can be purchased with a large discount for educators at Look for educator pricing!

The DECT grant is offered to California Community Colleges. They will caption your videos for you, but you will need to work with your campus Instructional Technologist to get the videos submitted. It is a grant process, so you will need to figure in the amount of time to get the videos professionally captioned (a few months). The summer is a perfect time!

Under the Resources > Accessibility File Cabinet page, you'll find the form you need for the DECT grant. Fill out that form and submit it to

Coming soon...

Some upcoming news and services that I'm waiting to officially announce and roll-out:

  • Desire2Learn version 10.0! A completely updated user interface (UI) that streamlines the look and actions across the entire platform. It's what we've been waiting for! Hopefully it will mean a similar delete and save across the pages...Currently, the district is looking at it to decide when it will be feasible to upgrade to it. Here's the press release: Desire2Learn Announces Major Enhancements in Usability and Personalization

  • CCC Confer will move from the Elluminate platform (bought by Blackboard at the same time as Wimba) to the new Blackboard Collaborate online teaching/conferencing tool. It looks and feels like a Wimba upgrade, so I'm really looking forward to it being the "new" CCC Confer!

  • Edustream! Edustream is a 3 in one solution for our campus, paid for by the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office. It will allow you to upload and post your videos to our own internal repository, and then connect to them using links. You can use it for other content besides videos, as well. You will also have access to the CCC Chancellor's Office repository of captioned video content! Plus, it allows for video streaming services for the campus.
No dates on any of these yet, but hopefully you'll hear about it via email sooner rather than later!

Wimba Subscription Ends June 30th

posted Apr 12, 2012, 4:41 PM by Ashley AR Chelonis

We will no longer be using Wimba after June 30th. Please download and save all of your Wimba Archives before July.

The alternative to Wimba is CCC Confer. Go to to start using it for webinars, online courses and office hours, and meetings. The benefits of using CCC Confer is that it is free to us through the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office. The Chancellor's Office also pays for free, live captioning for your CCC Confer sessions.
