With the coming of retirement age one reflects upon oneself, as it is now apparent that each person is the sum of his ancestors.  Like many people, I knew almost nothing particular about even my grandparents, and essentially nothing further back.  Until recently, finding one's genealogy was difficult and expensive, but with the coming of the internet a vast amount of genealogy documentation is online and so easily accessible.

Consequently, slowly over years, I have researched my ancestry, and with each new discovered my interest waxed.   I took notes, so to speak, in the form of text documents on my computer.   These became the foundation of this website.   It now includes my direct ancestry and additionally much documentation of other New England area McCoys, possibly related, that I may subsequently discover are indeed related.   If not, such documentation may at least benefit other genealogy researchers.

I recognize that anyone's ancestry is equally impacted by both one's male and female lines.  However, ancestry grows geometrically going backward in time, so becomes intractable quickly.   Thus, like must necessarily be the norm, I have restricted my documentation primarily to my direct male McCoy surname line.

This leads with certainty to a John McCoy, married to Lucy Marble, having three children, living in South Hero, Grand Isle, VT, circa 1805-1810.   Finding details concerning this John McCoy, birth date and parentage not stipulated, and death date only inferred by Lucy marrying,  has been my ultimate challenge.

Now, I believe new documentation have emerged back to this John's parents, Alexander Enoch McCoy and wife Lydia Spaulding, in the Nottingham County region in southeast present day New Hampshire, in the Colonial Era.   A family tree on Ancestry.com stipulates this connection and it makes logical and geographical sense.

In the Colonial Era censuses don't exist, but tombstones do.  Sites like FindAGrave are a great resource.  So are genealogy sites like Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org.   My  experiences show it is very important to ascertain married partner surnames, as that often is a strong indication as to location.    Many times McCoys have married multiple times within the same nearby family.

History books concerning particular families or particular towns are a good source of early genealogy.  For example, the 1883 book The History of Windham in New Hampshire (Rockingham County) 1719-1883 by Leonard Morrison; almost 1000 pages,  has many references to the Alexander McCoy family starting in 1730, and Thomas and John and William and Jane McCoy and more.  Over two and a half pages are devoted to the McCoy Family exclusively.

Another good reference is provided by the 1922 book History of the Town of Goffstown 1733-1920 v1 by George Plummer Hadley.   Still another source for early McCoys is the book History of the Town of Antrim, New Hampshire From its Earliest Settlement to June 27, 1877 with a Brief Genealogical Record of all the Antrim Families, by Rev. W. R. Cochrane.

These histories suggest it is likely that our McCoys came over from Ulster in the 1718-1720 immigration to the Boston area, and subsequently to the Nutfield area in present day southern New Hampshire.   Nutfield was renamed Windham.   Sources for this claim are in the Narrative Page.

Non-McCoy surnames included are:

Married “in” surnames:  Barnum, Caldwell, Kelly, King, Lord, Marble, Martin, McCollum, McLaughlin, Pendleton, Shea, Spaulding, Whipple, Wilson, and Zirndars.

Married “out” surnames: Bailey, Brankman, Bundo, Eaton, Fitch, Gile, Higbee, Hines, Holt, Lytle, McCargar, Minogue, Rich, and Wood

There are probably at least a hundred living direct descendants of John and Lucy McCoy, but of those probably only about ten of my son's generation have the surname McCoy. In addition to my son I know of several McCoy distant cousins in Southern California. I suspect living McCoy distant cousins also live in the Buffalo, NY region. Such persons are urged to email me at earlemmonsmccoy@comcast.net.

According to ancestry.com the McCoy name means this in Irish: "Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Aodha ‘son of Aodh’, an ancient personal name meaning ‘fire’, originally the name of a pagan god. Thus it has the same origin as McGee, McKay and McKee."

The Layout

The main factual component of this website is our McCoy Family Tree on this page.

Additionall, below, are links to ten tabbed subpages are provided that qualify and expound upon our McCoy Family Tree.

The first of these is a McCoy narrative written to flesh out the actual names and dates of the various persons listed in the family tree. While the family tree is factual (as I can make it so!) some of this narrative is necessarily speculative. From time line analysis and information from newspaper clippings and photographs I have derived what I believe is an accurate interpretation of our McCoy family history, albeit with gaps and no doubt omissions.

Additionally there are links to old maps, panorama views, and land plots which I think place our family in spacial perspective. The land plots are from Beer's 1876 Maps of Franklin County: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~clinton/franklin.htm.

Other links to family related historic newspaper clippings, to family photographs or images of McCoy family, to historic documents, and finally to McCoy family tombstones. My mother's direct McCollum ancestry is provided on a separate page.

Finally there is a link to a Miscellaneous page having sections on Which McCoy Families Not?, Self Imposed Limitations, and Observations About Internet Genealogical Search.

These web pages are dated as they are work in progress; please check back to determine if a revised version exists.

The following links open in a new browser tab; to return to this page just close the that tab.

Which McCoys Not

Blodface names  of children are direct surname ancestors

Earlier Generations

Alexander McCae b1525  having son

Alexander McCae b1541 having son

Alexander McCay (1580-1630)  from Argyleshire, Scotland; had son

Gilbert McCay (1625-1691)  born Kirkinriolla, County Antrim, Ireland, died Tyrone, Ireland) married 1645

Alexander McCoy (1695-1750)  born Bann River Valley, Ulster, emigrated to America in 1718, married

Mrs. Alexander McCoy (1689-?)  having two children

John McCoy (1726-1783), married  about 1744 in Windham, Rockingham, NH to

Janet Caldwell McCoy (1713-3/1790) b Ballymena, County  Antrim, died Windham, NH;  having nine children

Note: Caldwells are from Ballycastle, Ireland

Alexander Enoch McCoy (11/16/1744-5/24/1832) of Windham, Rockingham, NH married 1774 to

Lydia Spaulding McCoy (11/19/1743-?) Note: this line continued below

  James McCoy (7/24/1746-10/21/1841

        William McCoy (3/25/1748-3/25/1838?)married

Mary Douglas Gregg McCoy (1758-?) had daughter

Elizabeth McCoy (5/13/1755-?)

John McCoy (7/14/1750-1/9/1823) served 5 years in Revolutionary War; married

Margaret Boyd McCoy (1760-1817) having four children (2nd wife Mary Hutchins Hartwell)

Hannah McCoy (3/10/1752-1790?) probably married Robert Douglass

Susanna McCoy (1752-?) married Alexander Caldwell (maybe "Susannah") having two children

Thomas McCoy (1756-?)

Janet McCoy (4/13/1760-1790?)  Janet and sister Elizabeth lived together; no children

         Elizabeth McCoy (7/4/1763-1790?)

Jane McCoy (1724-8/20/1780) died in Windham, NH

Note:  This Alexander Enoch McCoy supposedly had a second wife Sarah "Sallie" Border McCoy (1754-1/1841) born Virginia died Tennessee; I believe this is mistaken.

Note: the above doesn't expose the family drama of our "Scot-Irish" heritage; many generations in the Bann River valley area of Ulster, then subsequent emigration in  about 1718 to the Massachusetts Colony, finally residing in the southeastern area of today's New Hampshire.

Note: Even in colonial America many Alexander Enoch McCoys and John McCoys existed; much online genealogy mistakenly convolute these.  The McCoys referenced here emigrated from Scotland but through many generations in Ulster, are confined to the New England area, and are not to be confused with others of the same names in Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

Note: An alternative "John McCoy" possiblity is Daniel John McCoy b1784 in Windham NH; father Alexander John McCoy b1765.

First Generation

Alexander Enoch McCoy (11/16/1744-5/24/1832) born and died Windham NH; married in 1764 to

Lydia Spaulding McCoy (1743-?)  born Hudson, NH, died in Windham CT [sic]

Janet Jane McCoy (6/9/1775-?)

Mary Polly McCoy Melvin (9/3/1776-?) married Hudson NH  3/24/1801 to James Melvin (1772-?)

Hannah McCoy Marshall  (3/1/1778-?) married Hudson NH to  Snow Marshall (1774-?)

Lydia McCoy (3/18/1780-1839) died Hudson NH married Phillip Marshall (1776-?)

Sarah McCoy Page (9/9/1781-3/1812) aka Sally; died Antrim NH

John McCoy (11/5/1784-1809) born in Windham NH; came to the Grand Isle area, married Lucy Marble.

Alexander Enoch McCoy (11/5/1786-4/4/1822)   married 1810 to Rachael Robinson in Windham

note: also James Alexander McCoy these dates

James McCoy (1790-7/14/1873?)  died in Windham NH; married C. Marshall (1789-?)

Note: Sarah McCoy (4/13/1784- 6/16/1864), daughter of Alexander Enoch McCoy and his 2nd wife Jane; never married (second Alexander Enoch and James too?)

Noted on rationale: In the 1790 Goffstown NH census a Joshua Martin is adjacent to Alexander McCoy.  In the 1800 Nottingham NH census Charles McCoy lives near Giles and Lords.  In the 1800 Goffstown NH census a Jane McCoy is listed as a Head of Household with five other persons.  In the 1800 Goffstown census a John McCoy, Charles McCoy, and Thomas McCoy live among John Morrill and Joshua Martin and Samuel Martin.

Note: the only reference found to John McCoy's 1809 death comes from the Van Ancestry tree on Ancestry.com; there he is named Daniel John McCoy.

Note:  In 1800 Vermont census, a John McCoy is living in Johnson VT (Franklin County, near Grand Isle), aged 26-44, with unknown wife and three childrenThis John is not the son of Alexander Enoch McCoy (mentioned above), and known to have died in 1809.  Note: in the 1790 New Hampshire census there are two Alexander McCoys, one in Antrim, the other in Goffstown and Antrim NH. In the Goffstown census a Charles McCoy lives nearby.  In Antrim a William McCoy also resides.

Note: In the 1800 New Hampshire census there is an Alexander McCoy in Windham having one son under 16 (son John being age 4); this is Alexander Enoch McCoy, of Windham, who married Lydia Spaulding.  Another Alexander McCoy in Antrim, has 4 sons under 16.   Additionally, the 1800 Vermont census shows a neighbor Jonah Whipple (10/22/1761-1/6/1843), born in Glocester RI but then living in Johnson VT, subsequently moved west as did the McCoy family to Franklin County NY. In particular, the granddaughter of this Jonah Whipple, Mary Ann Whipple, married the grandson of this John McCoy (that is, the son of John Carlos McCoy), Esek McCoy.

Note: Jonah Whipple and wife Hepsibeth Melvin Whipple had seven children, including son Nathan (who fathered Mary Ann Whipple McCoy) and daughter Cynthia Whipple Morrill (1797-2/10/1863) (husband Gilman Morrill 1794-3/15/1875). That daughter had a daughter Cynthia Morrill (1819-11/6/1848) who married Alphonso McCoy (1821-1895) by which produced daughter Hespia McCoy Bailey (1844-2/8/1898) and son Edwin McCoy (1846-2/9/1913). Additionally, when widowed, Alphonso McCoy married his sister-in-law Rachel Morrill (1834-11/8/1882) and had five additional children: John Gilman McCoy, Mary Emmaline McCoy, Lillian McCoy, Hattie S McCoy, Ulysses McCoy. Additionally Cynthia Whipple Morrill had another daughter Clarissa Morrill (1821-3/10/1895) who married Harrison McCoy and had sons Daniel McCoy and Gilman "Kid" McCoy.

Also John Gilman McCoy (1855-?) and wife Ida had daughter Hattie Jane McCoy (1882-?) who married 8/24/1897 Horace B. Achilles (1864-?) (both born in Potton QC); Gilmans and Achilles are both found in our McCoy ancestry.

Second Generation

John McCoy (11/5/1784-1809)  lived in the vicinity Grand Isle, VT;  no explicit death documentation has been found; married in 1805 to

Lucy W. Marble McCoy (1/12/1787-10/12/1859) subsequently widowed in 1809; then married Caleb Martin in 1810; died in Clinton County, NY

Sarah Sally Jane McCoy Hines (3/9/1806-1854)

Catherine McCoy Pease (1/27/1808-1/27/1829) born  and died in South Hero, VT

John Carlos McCoy (8/10/1809-10/26/1893)

Note: Caleb Martin had an unknown first wife, married about 1796, had children Ruby Martin Rockwell (b1798) and another unknown daughter; Ruby likely had daughter  Mariah E Rockwell Corbin (1823-1896), buried in South Hero Cemetery

Note: Lucy and Caleb married about 1810 and subsequently had the following children:

Theodorus (aka Dorus Martin, born 1810)

Walker Martin (born 1813)

Allen Martin (born 1819)

Thomas McDonough Martin (born 1821

Note: in 1800 census an Abel Hines (1739-1810) lived in South Hero; this may be Esek Hines' grandfather and so Esek lived within grandfather's household

Note: from Vermont Vital Statistics: Sally Hines, Death Date: 1854, Essex, Vermont, just southeast of Grand Isle; no details given
