Britannica Online School Edition
Broken into elementary, middle, and high school levels.  Gives students reviewed resources for typical classroom topics using age-appropriate language.

Designed for junior high and middle school students. Includes mainly full-text magazines, newspapers and reference books covering current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more.

Science in Context
Provides topic overviews, experiments, biographies, pictures and illustrations, and articles from over 200 magazines and academic journals.

A "nuts and bolts" overview of chemistry that focuses on clarity.

An entertaining guide to English grammar.  

Circulating Collection

Grades 3-8.  Covers a wide range of topics from math basics up through geometry.  According to the School Library Journal review the book appears formal but has "fun and inviting" content.

Below are some web resources that are geared to high school student, but may have information useful to some younger middle school aged students.

Khan Academy
A not for profit organization offering free online education.  Provides video tutorials on a multitude of topics, under general headings such as math, science, finance, humanities, and test preparation (e.g. SAT). 

HippoCampus was established by the Monterrey Institute for Technology and Innovation to provide "high-quality, multimedia content on general education subjects."  This content is appropriate for high school and college students and is available for free.

Created by Purdue University this website offers a wealth of information on writing for those in grades 7, up to professional writers.  Includes articles on getting started on a writing project, dealing with writer's block, creating an outline and so on.  This site also contains help for ESL learners and college students.
