April 4- April 8 - 2011 Minimum Days on both Monday and Tuesday

MONDAY - Warm One entry on Tween Tribune - remember to include some information from the article in  your response and write in complete sentences. You have to be sure that have signed up and are listed in my classroom to get credit.
WARM-UP - PREVIEW of article about Scared Straight. Part 1. Work on Vocabulary section -- review words -- rate them. Complete vocabulary section.

TUESDAY - WARM-UP - one entry on tween tribune.
Vocabulary Practice using Scope magazine packets. Review the words, then complete the Vocabulary Practice and Antonym practice together.

Yes/No Scared Straight - Review writing an opinion essay. Finding support (copy of page 8 available for students to use as a guideline). Steps 1-5.
  • Read today -- add items to your log and take any tests on completed books. Remember, our goal is a minimum of 20 books.
  • Group A - Read 180 or rosetta stone is an option.


March 28 - April 1
MONDAY - Wretched Writing - editing practice looking for homophone, apostrophe errors, misspellings, misuse of a/an, and incorrect verbs.
  • completed as a group -- be sure to look and mark your answers on the sheets.
  • Work on idioms and figurative language (in teams)
TUESDAY - Vocabulary Practice using Scope magazine packets. Review the words, then complete the Vocabulary Practice and Antonym practice together.
  • homework day
WEDNESDAY - Wretched Writing - first paragraph. Then we reviewed earthquake procedures and were dismissed from the earthquake drill.

THURSDAY - Finish the Wretched Writing and work on WRITE THE CAPTION together.
  • heading to the library to look for additional books for your lists. You must find at least 10 books from the library to add to your list. Be sure to include the call number for these books as well as the author and the title. Cannot be books that you have already read and at least five must be in your lexile level.
FRIDAY - FACEBOOK DEBATE - we will read this article together and then work on the debate. While reading, circle all homophones and any examples of figurative language, including our friends the idioms.
  • Read today -- add items to your log and take any tests on completed books. Remember, our goal is a minimum of 20 books.
  • Group A - Read 180 or rosetta stone is an option.


March 14- March 18
MONDAY - Test-Taking Skill Review with Tim and Moby. Review how to interpret questions using the HOBO article we read last week. Answer Teen Hobo's of the 1930's" Quiz on the bubble sheets. Review how to figure out what they are asking and how to use the bubble sheets to answer questions (edusoft). 
TUESDAY - "Today I am ____ because_____. " We will share about today. Complete the PROOFREADING - Wretched Writing in our packets.
WEDNESDAY - Haiku's for Math. Must be related to what you are learning in math. Vocabulary Practice and BOXCAR KIDS: Cause and Effect. Then read 180/reading.
THURSDAY -Guest teacher. "My favorite time of day is ____ because___." We will share out today. Be prepared.  You must write your response in your journal with a proper entry for credit next week. Name, date, and period and at least 1/2 the page. Read 180 today for everyone.
FRIDAY - Haiku about Social Studies. You must have it signed by the guest teacher.Read 180/reading today.

March 7 - March 10 ( No School Friday, March 11 - Pay Cut Day)
MONDAY - Reading Skill Review. Watch the movie then work on the preview, summary, vocabulary strategy with your current textbook items.
TUESDAY - CUE Review strategy for homework. Work on items from homework using some of the strategies you have learned.
WEDNESDAY - Haiku's for Science. Must be related to what you are learning in science. Read 180 and/or your group will be working one-on-one with the instructor.
THURSDAY - IDIOM practice on Quia.com (15 minutes). Read 180 and/or work with instructor.
FRIDAY - IDIOM/FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE test. Reading - look for figurative language in your book. Be sure to add to your journal. Write me an update about what you are reading in the reading journal here on Moodle.


Week of Feb. 28-March 4


Warmups Each Day (review on Moodle).
MONDAY - Math Practice -- fractions return. Watch the Tim and Moby on fractions. Then revise your answers and tackle the next sheet (for practice). Work on a larger sheet of paper to explain how to complete the problems. Explain to the class all the steps.
TUESDAY - Revise your paragraph by using a either a metaphor, simile or an idiom. Illustrate your paragraph. IDIOMS practice - Review the movie with IDIOMS. Review metaphor and simile. HOMEWORK/TEST REVIEW
WEDNESDAY - Work on Read 180 today. CONTENT WORK -- Make study guides with questions on flaps, answers up above for the chapters you are working on in class. Notes handed out for science and ss.
THURSDAY- Practice on quia.com the idioms at the bottom - 15 minutes. Then read 180 today.
FRIDAY -  Reading today -- look for a methaphor, similie or an idiom in your book that you are reading. Make a note in your reading log of the page and the item. Reading logs are in your blue folders. Add to your online moodle journal.. Include a date and the time

WEEK OF JANUARY 31 - FEB 3
THIS WEEK:
MONDAY - work with partners to complete work from last week. Review the CUE strategy and practice with some fun assignments.
TUESDAY - Complete the warm-up. Study time! Be sure to use your time wisely. Group A - you may study or choose Rosetta/Read 180.
WEDNESDAY - SRI Test after warm-up (everyone)
THURSDAY - Group Work and Software for most groups
FRIDAY - Warm up , Tween Tribune entry (groups AB - C; Group A it is optional) then reading or read 180. Sorry, we will have a game day on Monday. 



Week of January 24- 28th
MONDAY - THURSDAY - Warmups are posted daily on Moodle.
TUESDAY - Study day for tests and work. You must have your materials with you or you will NOT be allowed to go outside. If you don't have a specific test to study for or project to work on, you will be given work to practice your test-taking and study skills.
WEDNESDAY - Study Skills for each group . We will be focusing on some aspect of studying and/or preparation for how to "decode" the standardized tests.
THURSDAY - Read 180/Rosetta Stone for everyone. You must be in and going by 2:10 pm in order to receive full credit.
FRIDAY - Silent Reading -- we will be reading on Fridays so be prepared to settle after we do our warm-ups. You must be logging your start and end times in your blue folders and if you finish a book, we will log them on Monday and allow you to take any tests that you need. Be sure that you have your books listed on your lists in your folders and that you are completing your logs every week. Blue folders will be checked every Monday.



Week of January 18 - 21st
MONDAY - THURSDAY  - Warmups are posted daily on Moodle, but not in advance any more. Some of you were doing them all on one day, so each day the new one will be posted on moodle.

TUESDAY - Work Day
WEDNESDAY - After warm ups, practice on how to read test questions and figure out what they are asking you to do. Group A - choices as usual.
THURSDAY - After warm-ups , REad 180 and/or Rosetta Stone. Individual conferences and check-ins as needed.
FRIDAY - After warm -ups, reading and individual conferences/check-ins.


Week of January 10 - 13th

  • Read "In the News" and "6 Things to Know about Dr. King" together. Practice reading using the punctuation marks as guides.
  • Read "Rescue Dogs" and complete the quiz on Moodle (see below). We will work on them together.
  • THURSDAY - Read 180 and/or Rosetta Stone
  • FRIDAY - Reading a book together and reviewing the parts of the book.
GROUP AB:
  • Read the play, GIVE UP YOUR SEAT: MLK and the Bus Boycott as a play. Your roles are assigned below:
    • JOSE: Narrator 1 (N1); Corretta Scott King;
    • WAY: Narrator 2 (N2); Mrs. Bradley
    • JUAN M: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr; Ralph Abernathy

  • Complete the "AN IMPORTANT CAUSE" exercise that helps you focus on the cause and effect of events.
  • Complete the TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE_MLK on moodle (see link below).
  • THURSDAY : In moodle, complete the section on NEW YEAR'S SUFFIXES the work on Read 180.
  • FRIDAY: reading the whole time... you need to keep track of your pages and the goal is to complete at least 20 books by the end of the year. You can use books that you are reading for other classes, but you must put them in your logs in your blue folders so that I know which books you are reading.
GROUP B:
  • Complete NEW YEAR'S SUFFIXES (moodle - see the link below).
  • Read "Rescue Dogs" then complete the SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW assignment in moodle (listed below).
  • Read the article on "Kristen Stewart" and complete the KRISTEN STEWART assignment in moodle (linked below).
  • THURSDAY -
  • READ THE PLAY (as a story, not a play) and complete the YOU BE THE HERO writing assignment (a handout given to you). Complete the handout on moodle. (see the assignment below). You will need to complete the handout and type the paragraph for full credit.
  • READ 180 when done.
  • FRIDAY - Read -- you need to log some hours with your book. FRIDAY: reading the whole time... you need to keep track of your pages and the goal is to complete at least 20 books by the end of the year. You can use books that you are reading for other classes, but you must put them in your logs in your blue folders so that I know which books you are reading.
GROUP C:
  • Read the Article: Buried Alive. Review the Article using the format given to you as a sample. Be sure to think about and include in your review: Use your notebook to answer the following questions. Write your review in moodle (see link below).
    • What was the headline of the article?
    • What was the name of the magazine?
    • What was the article about?
    • What was your favorite part?
    • Who would you suggest this article to?
  • Complete the DEAR DALTON letter (handout).
  • Complete the Match the Meaning assignment (in moodle) see below.
THURSDAY - Finish anything from yesterday that you did not complete. Then work on Read 180. If you have not submitted your essays, you need to complete them and do a FINAL SUBMIT today.

Week of Oct. 25-29th
  • MONDAY:  
    • Log onto moodle. Complete the reading survey. 
    • 20 minute story card.... 
      • you will be randomly paired up with another student. 
      • you need to interview that student and then on the back of a 4x6 (lined side) index card, write a story about them. Be sure to work in at least a quote. After interviewing, switch (you will have about 10 minutes per person to interview). 
      • on the un-lined side of the card, be sure that you include a heading (last name, first name; period, date) and put your headline on this side of the paper. 
      • good luck! if your partner happens to be absent,  or there is an unequal number (so you cannot work in pairs, you can get approval from the teacher to go into a group of three). 
    • You only have 20 minutes to interview and then about 10 minutes to write your story. 
      • You will need to TURN THIS CARD IN AS YOUR TICKET OUT OF CLASS!

  • WED - FRI - 2x Rotations this week. Be ready to move you will be working in two stations during rotations this week. No warm-ups for these three days -- we will be moving quickly so settle in quickly. 

Week of Oct. 18 - 22
MONDAY
  • WARM UP- "When I am running the mile, I think about.... because....."
  • Work on completing your PE Essay Graphic Organizer. Review the parts of the assignment by reading through the instructions. Review what you have completed on the graphic organizer with the instructor and classmates. 
  • Start typing the essay in GoogleAps -- save as P6_PEESSAY_Your Last Name. If you remember how to share with me, then try it. If you cannot get into google docs, then just use MS WORD and we will copy it in later. 
TUESDAY  
  • WARM-UP - "When I was little, I used to really like ..... because...."
  • Work on content area work -- think 5W and an H
WEDNESDAY 
  • WARM-UP - Find somebody who... Worksheet - find three people. Remember you have to write down their answers and then after you read back what you wrote that they said, then they will sign your sheet.

      • use the READING LOG from the Tuesday Activity.

Week of September 27- October 1
MONDAY -
  • WARM UP - What are you looking forward to the most this year?
    • you need to write the topic and the date in  your spiral notebook.
    • Include a heading that looks like this:
      • Last Name, First Name
      • Period 6
      • Today's Date
    • You will need to write about the topic for five full minutes (without talking).
    • The second five minutes you will be required to talk over your answer with another person. Be prepared to share out.
  • ACTIVITY TODAY
  • We will continue around the room until everyone has been introduced.

Week of September 20-24th
  • MONDAY - Start CEDLT Testing/Study Group
  • TUESDAY - THURSDAY - CEDLT Testing Continues - Rotations and Groups Explained
  • FRIDAY - SRI test on the computers (all); last of the CELDT testing completed; rotations explained.

Week of September 13-17th

MONDAY - Picture Identification and Classification - group them into three groups; can work with a partner or work alone. Have to explain why you chose to group your words together.
TUESDAY - review of classroom activities
WEDNESDAY - review of classroom activities; group work begins
THURSDAY - review of classroom activities and introduction to groups and Rosetta Stone.

        You are introducing a new author to the world – yourself. You are to ghost write an introduction that includes all of the following information. You are NOT to write in first person (“I was ….”) you are to write in third person (“Ms. Maye was..”). You are not answering a worksheet, you are preparing the information that will be posted whenever your writing is featured.

        Items to Include:

        >Include your name
        >Your hobbies/interests (i.e. sports, reading, etc)
        >Best school experience has been and explain why
        >Worst school experience has been and explain why
        >What you hope to do this year in this class
        >What you want to do in the future (near or far)
        >Written in third person (no “I” statements)
        >Must be written in complete sentences, not answered like a worksheet.

        DEADLINE
      • Assignment is due Friday.
      • Must fit into onto a 4x6 index card.

  • FIRST ASSIGNMENT - Next week
    •  Prepare a piece to be used as a newspaper story for the school newspaper about the first week in school. You can write a narrative piece (what it was like for you), or interview others, take a survey, etc. Be creative! If you aren't sure of a piece, talk to me.
    • DUE: Rough Draft is due this Friday. We will then work together to get our pieces in final form Monday and Tuesday for the final reading on Wednesday. .
