Contemporary Abstract Algebra (nineth edition) by Joseph A. Gallian.
Your percentage grade in the course is determined by the higher of the following two schemes:
The course is curved in the sense that percentage cut-offs for letter grades are determined at the end of the term.
Additional information about upcoming exams will be posted at a later date. There will be no makeup exams in this course.
Assignments are to be submitted through Gradescope by 10 am. Your worst assignment will be dropped. If at least 60% of students fill out CAPEs at the end of the term, then the worst two assignments will be dropped. No late assignments will be accepted.
Following the return of each assignment and exam, there will be a window of time in which you may request a regrade. Regrade requests must be accompanied by a detailed explanation of why you believe the problem was incorrectly graded.
You are allowed to discuss homework problems with your classmates. However, the final write-up of solutions should be your own work, and reflect your own understanding of the problems. Copying or paraphrasing part of the solution to a homework problem from a classmate or from the internet is considered academic dishonesty.
Academic dishonesty is considered a serious offense at UCSD. Students caught cheating will face an administrative sanction which may include suspension or expulsion from the university.
