In 2002, with very little money, I used twenty dollars to get 2000 pennies from my bank. I added two pennies, and then shipped them all off to a company in Rhode Island who cleaned them, plated them in bright copper, then nickel, and finally 24 karat gold. In 2002, this process added value of approximately US$.06. I think today (2009), it is more like US$.25. I would give an individual 15 to 20 loose gold-plated pennies, and a certificate signed by me and a witness stating what had been done to the pennies, with the understanding the receiver would have to put the pennies back into circulation. In order to encourage people to not hold onto the pennies, I would also give them a single penny in a framed plastic capsule. This project consists of 100 signed and numbered sets.
