Grading Scheme

Individual Homework, Group Project, Participation (40%) .

Exam 1 (20%) : On 3rd week

Exam 2 (20%) : On 6th week

Exam 3 (20%) : This is on the day of the final set by the university or the last day.

Your grade book is accessible from https://canvas.wisc.edu/courses/149434

Final Grading scale

93% - 100%: A / 89% - 92%: AB / 82% - 88%: B / 76% - 81%: BC / 69% - 75%: C / 60% - 68%: D / 0% - 59%: F

Under an unusual circumstance, this may change, but only in a favorable direction.

Your final accumulative grade will be rounded up only. For example, both 92.3% and 92.7% will be rounded up to 93%.

Homework Policy

  • Homework and in-class problems are the most essential part of this course. Each exam is based on these problems.
  • Homework will be posted here.
  • Reading assignments are not checked.
  • We expect to collect about 11~12 individual homework throughout the semester (may be group or individual).
  • Homework is collected electronically via Canvas, and it is due 11:59PM on the day of due date.
  • For a possible late work, please refer to the "Late work" section.
  • Each homework is equally weighted regardless of its length and/or difficulty.
  • Part of homework is graded based on completion and part of homework is graded based on correctness.
  • Every written homework must be legible and all the necessary steps have to be written out and justified. Remember I can only grade based on what is written. For example, a work that has a clear explanation with minor mistakes will usually receive a better grade than a work with the correct final answer but no step shown in between.
  • Collaboration is highly encouraged. Discussing the problems during the office hours and on Piazza are also highly encouraged.
  • Everyone must submit an individually written homework unless it is a group project.
  • Your top 10 homework scores will count toward the final grade. This means there will be at least one lowest score drop.

Late Work

  • Each student will have 2 extensions that can be used for any two homework. If you are using this extension, you may simply submit your work late on Canvas preferably within 1 week from the due date (as this will prevent one from accumulating too much work). You do not need to notify me in advance.
  • There is no makeup for exams unless there is an emergency notified by Dean of Students office or recommended by the other parties such as McBurney center and UHS.

Regrading policy

You are responsible for checking your homework/exam grades regularly on Canvas. You must submit all your regrade requests within a week from receiving graded materials. After that, your grade is final and is not subject to change.

Calculator Use

Calculators or other electronic devices are not needed for this course. In particular, calculator will not be allowed during the tests. If a calculator is needed for a certain homework, then you will be notified.

Exam information

  • There will be three exams throughout the semester.
  • Each exam weights equal.
  • Exams are not accumulative. However, a good understanding of the previous material is crucial in order to understand more advanced materials.
  • Since each exam covers different materials, there is no drop.
  • For the final exam (=exam 3), an alternate exam can be given only if you are qualified under the rules set up by the university. Please set up any alternate testing in advance. This rule applies for all math 13X courses.

Academic Integrity

Cheating will not be tolerated under any circumstance. Please refer to academic integrity under the Dean of Students Office.

  • In case of crisis/emergency that you would like me to know, please inform me as soon as possible. Please note that if it would impact critical components of the course such as taking an alternate exam, such information has to be verified through Dean of Students office as well.

Miscellaneous

  • There are no pop quiz and no extra credit assignments. I will try to make grading expectation as clear as possible, and feel free to contact me if you need any clarification.
  • We will occasionally work as a group in class.
  • Attendance is not required. However, I might present some materials slightly differently from the book.
