2000 - 施君龍案 Shi Junlong’s arson attack

Background:

Shi Junlong led a group of Mainland Chinese seeking for right of abode in Hong Kong to to protest at the Immigration tower. They demanded the officials to issue the Hong Kong identity card but was refused.

Details:

The protesters were dissatisfied and set fire at the Immigration Tower. A senior immigration officer was killed. Shi was charged with murder and sentenced for life imprisonment but was later changed to 8 years' imprisonment for manslaughter.

Consequences:

The issue of right of abode continues. Shi applied for a one-way permit after he was extradited back to China and eventually became a Hong Kong resident. This provided another source of resentment for some Hong Kong people.
