The Student Academic Success Services (SASS) unit is recruiting qualified students for Peer Educator positions for the 2012 – 2013 academic year. If you know of any students who excel in academics, have a passion for assisting others, or are knowledgeable about the university, they may possess the qualities to serve as a campus Peer Educator. Peer Educators serve as role models for other SJSU students and assist them in developing their potential and academic abilities to succeed in college. As faculty and staff recommendations are highly valued, please encourage your students to consider applying for the Peer Educator positions.
SASS is currently seeking applicants for the three types of Peer Educator positions. Below find a brief summary of each position and attached find the job description.
Peer Advisor – Peer Advisors assist students with academic adjustment to SJSU and to the major. Peer Advisors are assigned to specific colleges (Applied Sciences & Arts, Business, Science and Social Sciences) or Academic Advising and Retention Services and assist students to navigate the degree, the major, and academic policies/procedures. Peer Advisors also provide referrals for students to other campus resources as well as recommendations to students on how to further their education/experience in their chosen major/profession.
Peer Mentor – Peer Mentors support students in adjusting to SJSU both socially and academically. They have knowledge regarding numerous campus resources and assist students to more easily navigate the university. Peer Mentors are assigned to individual instructors/departments in order to develop smaller communities within SJSU and so that students have more opportunities to be involved and engaged in their college experience.
Peer Tutor – Peer Tutors work with students one to one or in small groups on specific content/courses. The goals of tutoring are to assist students to develop effective learning strategies, improve critical thinking and academic/study skills, build self-confidence, and become independent learners.
Students can apply for more than one position based on their interests. The detailed job descriptions and requirements for each Peer Educator position are online at: http://www.sjsu.edu/larc/Job_Opportunities/. Students must also complete the online application form. Please note that there is a minimum GPA requirement of 2.75 for Peer Advisors and 3.0 for Peer Mentors & Peer Tutors.
The deadline to submit an application is 5:00pm, May 4, 2012. Interviews will be held May 9-24, 2012. Questions about the positions or the application process should be directed to:
