There have been several lead vocalists, the most famous being Lenny Williams, who fronted the band between early 1973 and late 1974, the period of their greatest commercial success. Their biggest hits include "You're Still a Young Man", "So Very Hard to Go","Soul With a Capital S", "Soul Vaccination", "What Is Hip?", and "Don't Change Horses (in the Middle of a Stream)."

  • MP strikes gold in San Francisco

During Spring Break, the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Choir and Marching Band toured to San Francisco. During their stay in the Bay area, the Marching Tomahawks participated in clinics with the staff of the world famous Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps and the directors of the choirs and bands of Stanford University. While at Stanford University, the concert choir brought joyful tears to many eyes, as they performed "Ave Maria" in the Stanford Memorial Church. Later that evening, the Jazz Ensemble entertained crowds on Pier 39 in San Francisco. Many, many photos from the trip can be found on the MPHS Music Booster's Facebook page.

One of the main focuses of the tour to San Francisco  was for the groups to perform in the Heritage Festival. Music ensembles of schools from 6 different states and 2 countries were represented in the international festival. The concert choir received a Bronze award for their performance. The Jazz Ensemble received a Silver award and placed 3rd of the ensembles in their division. And the Wind Ensemble received a Gold award, placing 1st of the ensembles in their division, and received an invitation to perform in Carnegie Hall in New York.
