Boogie Babes Show at Union Market
1309 5th St. NE
Washington, DC 20002
It was fun to be back at Union Market leading the singing and dancing in this show! Just to make everything more exciting, there was a massive traffic jam that had me sitting in stand-still traffic for 45 min, and almost made me miss my own show.  I eventually saw that it was a fender bender.  I found out later via Facebook that a friend of a friend was involved and nobody was hurt, but they were the ones who had shut down a major roadway, partially due to the other party overdramatizing the situation and bringing in emergency vehicles unnecessarily.  Ah, the joys of the big city.  In other news, I pulled into the parking lot, unloaded, set up sound and started the show in 10 min!! Must be a record & I hope to never have to try to break it!

The audience loved the addition of Max's beats & I look forward to having Max join me at future shows!! Murch Fall Fair (fair hours 12-4pm) with special guest Jim Thorne!
4810 36th St. NW (36th & Davenport St.)
Washington, DC 20036
It's become an annual tradition for me to play this awesome fair on the playground of Murch Elementary School in NW DC.  Most years  I've been bringing a different special guest artist, and this year was no exception!
Jim Thorne, rocket scientist, musician and comedy songwriter joined me this time. We recently had the pleasure of playing together for a pair of sixth grade science assemblies, and played some highlights from that program, including my brand new song "Hey Pluto!" And Jim's song "The Stars Go By."  Besides the music, there were tons of games, carnival rides, a dunk tank, climbing wall,  food, a used book and costume sale, and much more. I also featured an all Kindie playlist when I wasn't playing live -- so great to be able to introduce the huge crowd to many awesome independent kids musicians they may not have heard before.

Adams Morgan PorchFest, FREE
It was great to be back for the second annual Adams Morgan PorchFest where local talent brought our sounds to the streets of the Adams Mogan with the stunning architecture as the backdrop. Drummer Scott Manley joined me to rock the house -- literally!  The crowds loved going from house to house to listen as the front stoops and porches of Adams Morgan homes and businesses became performance spaces where local musicians played for the community for free!

It was so much fun to play for the crowds at the beautiful theatre at the Long Island Children's Museum!  The second show even had a group of princesses in the audience (celebrating the birthday of one princess friend)!  It was a rainy morning, but we had a blast singing & dancing together -- and by the time the music was all done, the sun even came out.  I'm sure it wasn't because I played "Keep on the Sunny Side" as a encore, right?

It's was bright and cheery as usual, and a very small intimate crowd enjoyed the show, which was more of a private music class in some ways!  We'd love to spread the word further about this neighborhood series and this great location for family music.  The series is taking a break for the summer, but will be back in the fall.  Look for updates as we get closer!

Saturday, March 29th, 2014, 2PM show @the Lounge, FREE (event from 10AM-4PM)
Smith Vocational High School
80 Locust St.
Northampton, MA 01060
It was such a pleasure to be a part of this fabulous event! Who can ask for more than a day of awesome family music and authors and puppets and storytelling and a dance party with a live DJ and a circus and a bounce house and a petting zoo?!?  How about when all that is free? I spent most of my time visiting with and listening to my fellow musicians, and I only wish I could have been in more than one place at a time so I could have taken in more of the festivities and heard all the music!  The audience in the Lounge (aka the school library) was great, despite the fact that  in the week before Meltdown, I came down with the nastiest of colds and had partial laryngitis on performance day (which turned into a sinus infection by the week after).  Even with that, we still had amazing time & hope to be able to return again (and do a performance at 100%)!

Another snowy day for a show!  Started the day with several inches of snow on the ground and slushy snow coming down heavily as I headed off to Union Market.  It was great to see a bunch of families brave the weather to sing and dance anyway! Some were singing along and knew all the words -- love that!! Everyone was even rewarded with a free lunch of a cool new product called a "salad slider" -- an on-the-go forkless salad, which is just great for caregivers of young kids.  You never know what kinds of treats you might get at Union Market, with all the great shops & eateries!

There was a great crowd at both circle times singing, dancing and rhyming with librarian Karen and me!  We played 'Stump the Librarian' to the "I Went To Visit a Farm" song -- a classic I borrowed from my Musikgarten curriculum and guess what?  We stumped her!!  She has to find the finger puppet that goes along with the animal the kids are helping to sing about and her horse must have galloped off somewhere.  Let's see if she can find it next time!  I also got some delightful video one of the caregivers took of a little girl grooving to "Nobody Likes Viruses and Germs"!

It's so much fun playing for The Boogie Babes crowds!  Since the kids are often quite young, I brought in a few new covers to make sure there was familiar music to balance my original material that might have been completely new to some audience members.  So, it was such a delight to hear people singing along to my take on "This Little Light of Mine" and to see people lifting their babies on the jumps in "Jump, Jive and Wail"!  Union Market is such a great location and full of friendly, interesting shops and eateries.  I look forward to next time!

The Murch Fall Fair is always a fun event with lots of  games and activities for the kids, great stuff for sale, and yummy treats to be had.  We expected a big crowd to be ready to boogie and to play the carnival games, jump on the moonbounce, shop and eat -- we weren't disappointed!  The crowd loved some new covers, singing and dancing along and we got a great response to a couple of newer songs that will be a part of the next record.  It was a beautiful day to be outside singing and playing!

The rain brought the celebration inside to the Kensington Town Hall, but there was no shortage of fun even if there was a slight shortage of sunshine!  A great crowd came out to celebrate this wonderful little children's library, and listen to music, meet some authors, take in a magic show and of course, eat birthday cake.

Adams Morgan PorchFest
2300 Ontario Rd. NW
Washington, DC 20009

This first ever Adams Morgan PorchFest  was a fabulous a celebration of local talent spreading their sounds throughout the streets of the neighborhood with the stunning architecture as the backdrop. Folks went from house to house to listen as the front stoops and porches of a dozen Adams Morgan homes and businesses became performance spaces where local musicians played for the community for free!  It was great being a part of this fun event!

It was fabulous being a part of this special anniversary celebration for the Farmer's Market! It's amazing that this market is still going strong after 40 years -- and there was a great crowd to shop, take part in the special heirloom apple tasting, and enjoy the music.

It was great to be back with Jeff Jensen by my side at this annual neighborhood event sponsored by the Chevy Chase Citizens Association!  There was a great turnout and everybody seemed to enjoy the free ice cream and mounbouncing on the commons.  The rain even held off for our show and most of the day. The next band, SmithJackson was a treat to listen to and smartly set up under cover so they were able to keep the music going while the tables were moved indoors after the rain came.

What a treat to get to play for the monthly MONA social once again.  Fun crowd & a great space! It was a nice surprise to have the preschool at the church join us for much of the set, too, and to see them dancing up a storm!  Here's a photo, taken by my 22-month old (very artsy with the angle and the ceiling, no?).

This was a wonderful event that I'm happy to support, organized by my friend, Regina Holliday!  Read more about  "The Walking Gallery" and Regina at  Regina Holliday's Medical Advocacy Blog:
"She [Regina Holliday] also began an advocacy movement called "The Walking Gallery."  The Gallery consists of medical providers and advocates who wear patient story paintings on the backs of business suits.  Paint and patients, pills and policy all come together within The Walking Gallery of Healthcare.  This 'walking wall" of 200 individuals who wear personal patient narrative paintings on their backs is changing minds and opening hearts."
"This advocacy mission was inspired by her late husband Frederick Allen Holliday II and his struggle to get appropriate care during 11 weeks of continuous hospitalization at 5 facilities.  Her paintings became part of the national debate on health care reform and helped guide public policy."

My first time playing at Union Market was a blast!  The sprinkle of rain didn't stop the lively, enthusiastic crowd from coming out.  Turned out to be a gorgeous sunny day by the end of the the show, too!  A beautiful space to play -- lots of seating and good eateries for people to enjoy a relaxed lunch afterwards (plus a huge lot with free parking to make it easy for families).  Thumbs up!

It was so exciting to be a part of this inaugural Earth Day festival!  It was sweet to be able to debut my new song about garbage & recycling "A Better Way" to such a receptive crowd.  There were people of all ages dancing and singing along, and I had my first-ever science heckler, who took issue with my cover of They Might Be Giants, "Meet the Elements" and the idea that every living thing is mostly made of four elements.  He thought it should be five and that phosphorus was getting a raw deal by not being included in the song.  So, take note of that, John and John!  There was video coverage and I will post a link if that becomes available.  Here's a shot of some folks doing the Penguin Dance!

It was so much fun to perform in the transformed Janney Atrium decorated festively for Tenley Winter Fest!  There was a great crowd taking in all the fun activities going on at Janney,  the Tenley-Friendship Library, Iona Senior Services, and at the area merchants -- from the craft market, to the food, the Children's Winter Garden of Lights, the gently-used toy sale & used book sale, and much more.

Cancelled -- came down with a nasty cold and unfortunately couldn't sing without mixing in coughing fits (not much fun to listen to, I think).  I was getting ready to re-work the show to use less voice, but luckily, the regular Wednesday performers, Rocknocerous, were able to change their schedule and do the show instead! (Phew!) First time having to outright cancel a show & I hope to not have to do that again anytime soon.

The Murch Fall Fair  is always a fun event with lots of  games and activities for the kids, great stuff for sale, and  this year didn't disappoint.  The crowd was huge and was rocking out to the pre-show music while they played carnival games, moonbounced, shopped and ate!  They even stopped to listen, sing and dance when Anna and I played the live show.  The kids up front were great, helping out in the rhythm section!  They put up a lovely article on the Murch Blog about the fair, too.

We had a great and enthusiastic crowd come out to Atlas for the Boogie Babes show!  This time Anna led the children on some tap and shake instruments when she wasn't playing violin.  I'll definitely continue to bring rattles, jingles and such along for some helpers to play during future shows since this was a big hit.  I look forward to the next show with the Boogie Babes!

It was great to be one of the inaugural performers for the Junior Jams family series at  Foundation.  It's a brand new intimate performing space with a beautiful stage and listening area that has a cozy and friendly feel.  The crowd was enthusiastic and fun and, as always, it was fabulous to have Anna join me to rock the house!  Will post photos if I can get some sent to me.

It was great having Anna-Kaisa Kaile join me with her fabulous violin playing at this show! I had a blast playing in front of the adorable Acorn shaped Pavilion at the Kids' Corner of the fest, though it was a bit hairy when a huge gust of wind started dropping acorns on the crowd -- luckily no one was hit!  It was lovely to meet fellow kids performer Mr. Gabe who performed after me.  Met some other interesting people, and hope to have news to share soon from those meetings!

The Great Frederick Fair

All the action was at the Kids Expo at the Community Tent where families were coming through and singing & dancing along.  I could see the crowds listening, dancing, and smiling as they passed by at this huge fair.  Later, we saw a cow in labor at the birthing tent just down the way -- but she didn't give birth while we were there (though my kids were really lobbying hard to stay in case she delivered before the fair shut down for the night)! We also saw some adorable baby animals.  Grabbed some video and will try to post soon.

The Great Nurse-In, event goes from 9AM - 4PM; Other performers to include Mr. Skip, The Singing Lizard, Ukelele Phil & the Hula Kids, and The Uncle Devin Show.
I had an amazing time at the Great Nurse-In!  I debuted a new song, called "Best Thing in the Universe" on the subject of nursing and feeding babies that I just wrote in honor of this event!  The Great Nurse In was a gathering in support of public breastfeeding with the purpose of educating and empowering the public and normalizing nursing for today's society and future generations.  The event was created as a response to multiple news stories about women being told they could not nurse in public in places they were actually legally allowed to do so.  You can learn more about this event on their Facebook page or check out this article in the Huffington Post, this one in the Washington Post, or this one from the SheKnows Blog.

Check out these blog posts reporting on the event, including this one from Breastfeeding Friendly which includes a video clip of my new song!  This one from paala also mentions the music.

Photo: The Great Nurse-In on Saturday was such fun! People enjoyed the new song, which now has a title --"Best Thing in the Universe." If I can edit together the two partial videos I got, I will post. Weirdest moment: when tourist came up on stage with a child he picked up (not his own!) to take a photo while I was introducing the breast feeding song & was trying to get me to interrupt my intro to pose!

I had an amazing time at my first ever CD release show!   It was so much fun getting to play and sing along with the background tracks from the record so everyone could enjoy the drums, bass, keyboards, harmonies, and other fun sounds from the album.

Devin Walker of the Uncle Devin Show joined me on drums and Anna Kaisa-Kaila joined me on violin for several songs including Lies and Fish and the cover tunes that I play live.
The audience was so enthusiastic, singing and dancing along!

I gave out copies of a coloring book I created with artwork from the record (and that same Gravity Vacation Coloring Book is now available as a bonus with your download).  We had a dance contest and giveaway which included free downloads, autographed copies of the CD release poster, and signed guitar picks that I've used practicing and in previous performances (a great idea that my kids thought of).  The CD was available for sale for the first time and will be available soon through Bandcamp, as well as at future shows!

I had a blast doing my first show for the Boogie Babes -- a couple of awesome moms who got tired of driving all over the place for quality children's music, so they decided to start a concert series in their own neighborhood.  It was so popular that they now organize weekly concerts at two venues in the Capitol Hill area.  Check out www.boogiebabes.com for more info!  I loved playing my first show for them at Atlas and hope to do more shows for them in the future.  It was my first show including the background tracks from the record in the show, which was a fun development.  I was also delighted to have the talented Anna Kaisa-Kaila join me on violin for Lies and Fish.

What could be more fun on a Saturday morning than singing & dancing in the great outdoors after hunting for colorful plastic eggs?  The festivities started at 9am with Bag Decorating.  9:30am the Easter Egg Hunt began.  Music, games, and a potluck breakfast followed!  There was a big crowd and they had a great time celebrating and playing.  The weather even cooperated -- started out overcast, but the sun was shining brightly by the time everything wrapped up!  I had a great time and so did the audience.

Tuesday, June 7th, 6 - 9 PM, The Walking Gallery, Washington, DC
(Kaiser Permanente Center For Total Health, 700 Second St. NE, Washington, DC 20002)
I'm delighted that Regina Holliday invited me to take part in this event!  It was truly a unique night and great to be there.  Regina is a force bringing art and music to patient advocacy, making sure that the human stories don't get lost in the clinical world of medicine.  (See more about Regina and her work on her blog, http://reginaholliday.blogspot.com/)
At The Walking Gallery,  I had the chance to debut my new song, "Nobody Likes Viruses and Germs!"  The performance was videoed, and I hope to get the link to it and post some photos soon!

"The Walking Gallery is a group of people who walk into a conference space wearing business jackets or doctor’s lab coats.  That alone is not unusual.  But these jackets are works of art.  Each one shall be painted with the story of a patient or an element of medical advocacy by Regina Holliday or another artist.  These masterpieces will be worn on the backs of government employees, technology gurus, medical professionals, social media activists, CEO’s of companies, artists and many others.  By walking they are spreading awareness of the concept of truly patient centered care."

Event starts at 10:30 AM (doors open at 10:00 AM)
It was great to be able to participate in this fundraiser that is trying to save the popular Kids' Farm and Pizza Playground at the National Zoo which is slated to close this Spring due to budget cuts.
I enjoyed sharing the stage with
The Great Zucchini, John Henry, and Bingo the Clown!
The event raised several thousand dollars towards saving
this wonderful community resource, and while it's not enough to save the Kids' Farm yet, hopefully the show demonstrated the support out there and will attract some other funding sources.  You can check out the organization's website for an update on their progress

Robert Clark joined me on guitar at all three shows!  Technical issues with the power supply at the White House Market resulted in an unplugged set for passers by.  Bethesda and Dupont circle were fabulous and fun!  Check out the photos!
At Dupont it was a bit rainy, but we stayed dry under the tent.  Plus, it was my first time playing for livestock -- a couple of 2 1/2 week old baby calves right next to us seemed to enjoy the music, though I couldn't gauge the reactions of the two hens.
At Bethesda we were videoed by Glenn Garnes, a reporter for the Village Connector in Montgomery County.  Below are the videos he shot.  He also featured me as the "Neighbor of the Week" and "Video of the Week"!  You can check out the stories here http://villageconnector.com/montgomerycountymd/
