Welcome to the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival Bluegrass academy page!

The Grey Fox Bluegrass Academy for Kids (BGA), established in 1999, is a free four-day camp-style learning program held each year during Grey Fox. The program teaches children (age 8-17) to play, sing and perform bluegrass music. BGA consists of sectional instruction with their assigned instrumental teacher; ensemble sessions with the entire group; harmony singing lessons; and guest appearances by musicians who are performing at Grey Fox. The program’s grand finale is a ‘Graduation Gig’ Sunday afternoon on the High Meadow Stage. Approximately 100-120 kids participate in BGA each year. Students have fun, learn a lot, grow in confidence and make friends that can last a lifetime.

We offer instruction in mandolin, banjo, bass, cello, viola, fiddle and guitar in classes of approximately ten students each.

and Golden Slippers in G

 Please work on the D and G scales (for all instruments) and G, D, A and C chords on your instruments (for mandolins, banjos, and guitars)

Our 2016 songs were;

Old Slewfoot. A song about a bear written by Johnny Horton and brought to bluegrass by Jim and Jessie

Out on the Ocean. A classic bluegrass song written by the founder of Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine, Pete Kuykendall.

and The Foggy Mountain Special. An iconic bluegrass standard by Earl Scruggs.

Files for all of these songs can be found at the bottom of this page;
Download the music for your individual instrument and the lyrics sheet too.

Very important notes!
1. Every musician should practice the G and D scales (especially banjo, mandolin and guitar players) on the instrument they are going to play everyday before we meet.
2. Please download the lyrics to the songs below and practice singing them along with the youtube examples that will soon be up.
