### Parent Update: Week Ending 12/15/17

Ms. Summer:
Students worked in stations to apply their knowledge of module 6 and module 7. Students solved real world problems involving ratios, rates and unit rates. Students set up and solved proportions and used an app called "Thinking Blocks" to model problems involving ratio reason.

This week 6-6, 6-7 and 6-8 read and discussed Chapters 7 - 9 of The Giver

Ms. Maslow:
My students began a unit of study on Simple Machines.They learned what simple machines can do, the names of the simple machines, and how does an inclined plane qualify being called a simple machine.

Ms. J. Hanley:
Students in 6-11,6-14, and 6-15 finished their suspense essays and continued reading their novel The Giver while focusing on perspective and characterization.

Mr. Tupper:
This week my math class students continued their work with percents. Students learned about both finding and using percents in a number of real world situations. Students also began reviewing for their percent quiz.

Mr. Murolo:
Students in 7-1, 7-2, 7-4, 7-5, and 7-12 were introduced to Physical and Chemical Changes and completed Task Cards to test their knowledge. Additionally, students were introduced to the History of the Atom.

Ms. Cucos:
Class 7-17 continued to read The Pearl. We also began a new science unit on waves.

Mrs. Keller:
7th Grade students came to the library to work on their newsletter projects. You can find resources hereStudents learned how to determine which information is best for their research need and how to use databases to find a variety of sources. Ms. Traiman:
In ELA, Class 8-12 finished reading The Pearl by John Steinbeck.Finished The students worked on an essay on how the significance of the pearl changed over time
In math the  7th graders wrapped up  rate of change and the 8th graders continued learning about slope and the y intercept equation.

Ms. Casey:
My classes are finishing The Pearl and working on the chapter 6 syllabus.

Ms. Kieran:
This week my classes will be completing our work on The Pearl

Ms. Zhan:
This week, the 8th grade science students will be learning about genetics and probability.  They will learn about the Father of Genetics - Gregor Mendel and will be learning how to find the probability of offspring inheriting certain traits that will and will not be expressed.
