Marine Park Robotics
Library News...Mrs. Keller
Marine Park prides itself to learning beyond textbooks and the classroom walls! Here are some of the goings on in our school:
Ms. Kieran’s Builders Club:
Mr. Gamsey - Robotics:
The Debate Team - Ms. Powers:
This weekend the Marine Park Debate Team attended the first debate workshop of the season at Goldstein High School. They spent the day learning new techniques to improve their debate skills. The students will be debating in the New York City Urban Debate League this year. The debate team will attend their first debate on October 22nd at Hunters Point Community Middle School. Our Marine Park Debate Team will be featured in the next NYC Urban Debate Team Newsletter.
Gardening Club -Ms. Realmutto:
With good weather forecasted for Friday, students in the Gardening enrichment class will finally be able to "get their hands dirty" in the garden, an activity they have been looking forward to. It will also be a period of discovery as students observe what has changed since their last visit.
Digital Storytelling - Mrs. Keller
Students are at different stages of their first project, which is to make a book trailer. See our examples here. Some students are still writing their scripts, others are busy mapping out their trailer with a storyboard, and after a lesson on copyright, some students have started to gather images and sound for their trailer.
Trout in the Classroom - Mr. Gamsey
The "Trout in the Classroom" project is up and running again. Mr. Gamsey went upstate to a conference in Hyde Park, NY to get our trout eggs. His students will be monitoring their growth and development while maintaining the cleanliness of the tank over the next 6-months until we are ready to release them into the watershed in April.
If you want to stop by to see the eggs, please feel free!
The four Marine Park Robotics teams are back to work to defend our titles. Last year one of our First LEGO League (FLL) teams won the FLL Brooklyn Qualifier at Xavarian H.S. and competed at the NYC championships at the Javits Center. The SeaPerch underwater robotics team won the NYC Middle School Championship and went to LSU in Baton Rogue, Louisiana to compete in the National SeaPerch Challenge. We are excited for our new season. This year's FLL theme is "Animal Allies" where the robot game and research topic each involves the cooperation between animals and humans.

Our trout are nearing the end of their time with us, as 35 of Mr. Gamsey's 6th grade science students will venture upstate to the watershed on April 21st to release the trout into the wild. We are going to miss our babies!
The Builders Club is holding a sticker drive to benefit the pediatric unit of Methodist Hospital. We are looking to collect a variety of stickers so that they may be used throughout the year. So clean out those craft drawers and lend a hand! Single FULL sheets are very welcome. We will be collecting stickers starting today and ending on Thursday, March 24.
Mr. Gamsey's trout are doing great!!! There are approximately 25 trout who are at the fingerling stage of their development. They range between an inch to two inches long. On April 21st, selected students from Mr. Gamsey's 6th grade science classes will be heading upstate to release the trout into the watershed. This should be a very unique opportunity for those students participating.
