Beyond the Classroom Walls...

Ms. Realmutto
Students in the Gardening class will be continuing the fall clean-up in the garden.

Marine Park Robotics
Mr. Gamsey's Marine Park Robotics class ventured to the Animal Medical Center of NY (AMCNY), one of the largest animal hospitals in the country. This year's First Lego League (FLL) theme is called "Animal Allies". To help with their research, the teams met Dr. Goldstein, the Chief Medical Director for the hospital. He and his staff gave the students a "behind the scenes" tour of the hospital. Some of the departments we saw were the emergency room. intensive care unit, surgical suite, dental lab, physical therapy, cancer care and catheter lab. We watched as dogs were having their teeth cleaned; having a cardiac stent inserted; recovering from surgery, and going through physical therapy. It was a unique, once in a lifetime experience for the students.

Mrs. Kieran
The Food Drive has concluded. The Builder's Club would like to thank everyone for their donations.

Library News...Mrs. Keller
Students in Digital Storytelling continued creating their book trailers. 6th Graders who did not attend the trip got a glimpse on using movie maker. Many classes have started their author study units and have come to the library to borrow books. Mrs. Keller also sent out the first batch of overdue notices via PupilPath.

Marine Park prides itself to learning beyond textbooks and the classroom walls! Here are some of the goings on in our school:

Ms. Kieran’s Builders Club:
The Builders Club is holding a Food Drive in support of Students Against Hunger to benefit the NYC Food Bank. The Food Drive will run from Oct. 24-Oct. 29, 2016.

Mr. Gamsey - Robotics:
The Marine Park Robotics teams are laser-focused on their missions for this year's First Lego League (FLL) tournaments. This year's theme is called, "Animal Allies". Students will investigate how humans and animals have learned to rely on each other. To assist them in their research robotics class will be going on a trip next week to the Animal Medical Center of NY, the largest animal hospital in the region. They will tour the facility and meet with the Medical Director of the facility to "pick his brain" for research ideas.

The Debate Team - Ms. Powers:

This weekend the Marine Park Debate Team attended the first debate workshop of the season at Goldstein High School.  They spent the day learning new techniques to improve their debate skills.  The students will be debating in the New York City Urban Debate League this year.   The debate team will attend their first debate on October 22nd at Hunters Point Community Middle  School. Our Marine Park Debate Team will be featured in the next NYC Urban Debate Team Newsletter.

Gardening Club -Ms. Realmutto:

With good weather forecasted for Friday, students in the Gardening enrichment class will finally be able to "get their hands dirty" in the garden, an activity they have been looking forward to.  It will also be a period of discovery as students observe what has changed since their last visit.

Digital Storytelling - Mrs. Keller

Students are at different stages of their first project, which is to make a book trailer. See our examples here.  Some students are still writing their scripts, others are busy mapping out their trailer with a storyboard, and after a lesson on copyright, some students have started to gather images and sound for their trailer.

Trout in the Classroom - Mr. Gamsey

The "Trout in the Classroom" project is up and running again.  Mr. Gamsey went upstate to a conference in Hyde Park, NY to get our trout eggs.  His students will be monitoring their growth and development while maintaining the cleanliness of the tank over the next 6-months until we are ready to release them into the watershed in April.

If you want to stop by to see the eggs, please feel free!

Marine Park Robotics

The four Marine Park Robotics teams are back to work to defend our titles. Last year one of our First LEGO League (FLL) teams won the FLL Brooklyn Qualifier at Xavarian H.S. and competed at the NYC championships at the Javits Center. The SeaPerch underwater robotics team won the NYC Middle School Championship and went to LSU in Baton Rogue, Louisiana to compete in the National SeaPerch Challenge. We are excited for our new season. This year's FLL theme is "Animal Allies" where the robot game and research topic each involves the cooperation between animals and humans.
