Mysticetes

Bowhead whale, Balaena mysticetus

Part of the Broad/MIT Institute vertebrate genome sequencing program

Contact: Jeremy Johnson

Humpback whale, Megaptera novaeangliae

This project is conducted in collaboration with the UC Santa Cruz genome center (Nader Pourmand and Ed Green), Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies (Jooke Robbins) and Martine Bérubé (University of Groningen). The data are generated to enable population and evolutionary analyses at the organismic and cellular level

Minke whale, Balaenoptera acutorostrata

This project is conducted by the Korean Marine Biotechnology Research Center, the Korean Research Development & Research Institute and the Genome Research Foundation. The objective is to provide full genome sequence of the most abundant whale species in the world. It will provide genetic diversity of the species and will make us understand how whales adapt to environmental stresses. Also, as whales are long-living the genome comparisons will provide us with clues on how they live relatively longer than other mammal and figure out the evolution and phylogeny of whale.

Killer whale, Orcinus orca

To sequence the killer whale genome and provide a high coverage reference genome to facilitate the mapping of reads from genome wide scans of a dataset of killer whale types. This will allow us to remove reads that map to duplicated regions within the genome.
