Research Interests

My work focuses on the management and interactions of agriculture and environment under increasing societal demands and climate change. I have a specific interest in the possibilities digital agriculture, geo-spatial data, and advanced data collection and analytical techniques can bring to increase the performance of the agricultural sector. I am employed as a Scientific Officer at the European Commission - Joint Research Centre (JRC). 

I am also active in evaluating the potential of citizen science applications for land cover and use monitoring (e.g. the H2020 LandSense project). Recently, we have begun using geo-tagged pictures in combination with computer vision to obtain in-situ data on crops and management, land cover and use, and rural landscapes, including biodiversity. We collect and generate in-situ data to improve the algorithms we use to monitor agriculture with remote sensing (e.g. with the Copernicus Sentinels).

I am also involved in the operational forecasting of national crop yields with the MARS Crop Yield Forecasting System with a special focus on the European Union and neighbourhood countries. These forecasts are published monthly in the MARS Bulletin. For an overview of our activities check out these 5 short videos.
