Maria Miller, MP for Basingstoke, returned from her Parliamentary Armed Forces Scheme trip where she had spent six days meeting military personnel who are currently on deployment in Al-Udeid and Kandahar.

Maria said, “It was fantastic to meet the military personnel who are working in support of our armed services work in this important part of the world. I was also able to meet constituents who are serving out there. Life in the Forces can be a difficult one and I admire the resilience and drive that the Force’s personnel have. They are dedicated to their work and doing the best job that they can under difficult conditions.”

Maria went to say, “I have concerns about welfare issues regarding our service personnel serving in Afghanistan. It is absolutely vital that military personnel have the best possible support whilst they are out on deployment and on their return. In particular more work needs to be done to ensure that we fully understand the effect regular deployment into active war zones such as Afghanistan is having on our ability to retain service personnel in the forces. I will do all I can in Parliament to ensure that these issues around welfare are a priority.”
