Some journal templates have spaces for the TOC material at the end of the template. This can cause problems with Word’s built in endnote features that insist on putting the endnotes at the very end of the document.
To start solving the problem, click on the icon that looks like a paragraph mark. This is a toggle that displays or hides the formatting marks already in the document.
With the formatting marks displayed, add some extra space add some extra space just before where you want the references to start. Then on the “page layout” tab in the “page set up” box click on “breaks” and select “continuous”.
A new section break mark will appear.
Next, tell Word to put the endnotes at the end of the section rather than at the end of the document. To do this on the on the “references” tab, open the “footnotes” dialogue, then change the location to “end of section”, and click “apply”.
Now you can start replacing the template text with your own text and references.
Clicking the paragraph icon again will hide the formatting marks.
