General March questions

When is the March for Science - Raleigh, NC?

The March will occur April 22, 2017 (Earth Day) as a parallel satellite event to the National March for Science happening in Washington, D.C. on the same day.  We will begin gathering no earlier than 9:00 am at Shaw University, start the March through downtown Raleigh at 10:00 am, and arrive at Moore Square by noon for a Rally and Community Science Fair.

Where is the starting point?

We are please to announce that our starting point will be at Shaw University, in downtown Raleigh!

Is registration required?

Registration is not required, but we do ask that you register so that we can better plan for the number of anticipated attendees.   You can also join our Facebook Event.  We also ask that you register through the national March for Science website here and indicate that you will attend your local march to help us get a better WORLDWIDE accounting of marchers!

I am not a scientist.  Can I still attend?

Absolutely! You don't have to be a professional scientist to be a supporter of science, or a science enthusiast.  Science is for EVERYONE, and we want EVERYONE who cares about science to participate.

Will there be bathrooms available during the March?

Are we allowed to take photos/videos during the March?

Transportation

I live in/near Raleigh, NC. What is the best way to reach the March?

Downtown Raleigh will be busy with several other events also taking place in the area, so parking will likely be difficult.  We HIGHLY recommend people utilize public transportation - GoRaleigh and/or GoTriangle - or a rideshare service - Uber or Lyft, etc.  The downtown bus terminal is across the street from Moore Square, where the March will end and the Fair and Rally afterwards will be held.

If you plan to drive, there are several public parking lots in downtown Raleigh within walking distance of the March and Rally, most with a parking fee during the day.

I do NOT live in/near Raleigh, NC. What is the best way to reach the March?

One option is the train. Amtrak has a train station near downtown Raleigh, which is a long walk or short ride (by Uber/Lyft/taxi) to the March.

Greyhound Buslines does have a station in Raleigh, NC, but it is not near the March in downtown Raleigh.  There may be GoRaleigh buses connecting the Greyhound terminal to the downtown area.

If you plan to drive, there are several public parking lots in downtown Raleigh within walking distance of the March and Rally, most with a parking fee during the day. However, due to anticipated heavy crowds downtown that day, from the March and other events, expect traffic delays and difficulty with finding parking.

Will there be dedicated buses for the March?

We are looking into this possibility, though currently we do not have the funds to provide buses.  If you would like to help with organizing dedicated buses and/or identifying a platform to make this happen, please Contact Us.

Alternatively, a group of people could charter a bus.  Crowdsourcing options include RallyBus and Skedaddle.

Will there be ADA-accessible transportation to the March?

We are looking into this possibility, though currently we do not have the funds to provide transportation.  If you would like to help with organizing ADA transit, please Contact Us. GoRaleigh Access is an ADA-accessible public transportation options for those in the covered area.

Security

What will security be like at the March?

We are working on getting all the necessary permits for the event, including from the City of Raleigh for the March itself and the rental of Moore Square for the Rally afterwards. Getting these permits requires notifying the Raleigh Police Department of our event, and coordinating with local law enforcement.

In additional to local law officials, who will be easily identifiable as they will be in uniform, we are looking into having volunteer, trained marshals on hand to help with the event's safety.

We are also exploring the option of having Legal Observers present to help with any issues that arise, though we do not expect this to be necessary.

Legal

What should I do if something happens during the March (Arrest, altercation, etc)?

We do not expect anything negative to happen during the March or following Rally. We are working with the local law enforcement, and hope for a peaceful event.

However, should something happen, we are looking into setting up a helpline by phone, and having legal observers present to hopefully address these possible issues.

As a non-citizen, I am worried about attending.

In working with the local law enforcement, we have brought up this issue.  We have received assurance that the Raleigh Police Department in attendance will not be looking for undocumented attendees.  All police will be easily identifiable in their uniforms.

Services

Will there be restroom facilities available?

Yes, we will have portable, gender neutral facilities placed at the end of the March, at the Rally, in Moore Square. This includes ADA-accessible facilities.

Will there be breastfeeding facilities available?

We are looking into providing tents at Moore Square at the end of the March and during the Rally, budget permitting.

Can we bring children?

Yes!  We want this to be a family affair.

What if a child gets lost?

Organizing staff and hopefully trained marshals will be present along the route and at the end of the March in Moore Square.  We will try to have a dedicated area/tent where lost children can reunite with their family.

What if I am hearing/speaking impaired, or don't speak English?

We are exploring the option of having ASL translators during the Rally.  We also anticipate having some speakers who are bilingual and may prepare some or all of their speech in Spanish.

Merchandise

Is there official merchandise that we can buy to support the March?

Yes!  Get your official March for Science - Raleigh shirts (adult and youth sizes) from Bonfire, and a portion of the price goes directly to us!  Other websites (::cough:: Teespring ::cough::) are selling tshirts with our name on them, but they are NOT made by us or for us, and we get no donations from them!

Lodging

Is lodging provided?

Attendees are responsible for their own lodging if they wish to stay in Raleigh.  There are several hotels in the downtown area, including within walking distance of the March.  As a warning, as several other events are taking place in parallel to ours in the area, many places may be already quite full and/or expensive.
