What's a SWNI?  And who is ONI?

Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc., (SWNI) is a nonprofit coalition that provides support services in seventeen Southwest Portland neighborhood associations and three business associations. SWNI is governed by a board of directors with representation from each neighborhood association and local business association. Funding is primarily from the City of Portland through an annual contract and partially through board fund-raising efforts. These funds help pay for staff, an office, printing, postage, and materials, which support neighborhood associations and citizens in their efforts to participate in government processes, maintain quality of life, and fight crime.  To subscribe to SWNI’s free printed monthly newsletter, send your postal address to the SWNI office at office@swni.org.

The Office of Neighborhood Involvement, (ONI) serves as a link between residents, neighborhoods, and City of Portland bureaus.  ONI works in partnership with many organizations including Neighborhood Associations, District Coalitions, Business District Associations other City agencies, and a wide range of community organizations and neighborhood activists to involve and inform the public in the civic life of the City.  In addition ONI provides a wide range of neighborhood livability direct services.  http://www.portlandonline.com/oni/index.cfm?c=25967

Where We Are

Maplewood is a small neighborhood, located in the Southwest area of Portland, Oregon, and is surrounded by three other southwest Portland neighborhoods: Hayhurst to the north, Multnomah to the east, and Ashcreek directly south. The neighborhood boundaries are defined by SW Vermont Street, SW 45th Avenue, and SW Multnomah Boulevard. The western boundary of Maplewood is the Washington County line. Maplewood's topography is hilly with two tributaries of Fanno Creek: Vermont Creek and Woods Creek. Vermont Creek runs east to west in the northern portion of the neighborhood and Woods Creek runs east to west in the southwestern portion of the neighborhood.

The land bordered by SW Multnomah Blvd., SW Canby, SW 51st, and SW Custer is constrained by the steep slopes, flooded areas, and wetlands of Woods Creek. In the creek corridors there are numerous underground springs. There are no through streets which pass over the creek drainages so there are few north to south connections from most of Maplewood's streets to Multnomah Blvd. Likewise, there are only two ways to travel east to west and exit the neighborhood: Vermont Street and Maplewood Road.
