The ancient Israelites and Greeks didn't have special symbols to
represent numbers. They used the letters of the alphabet to write
numbers. Numbers that are not in the tabels bellow were writen through the sum, for example, the number 345 could be writen in Greek as τ (tal), μ (mi), ε (épslon) (300+40+5), τμε = 345. The value of the words was computed making the sigma final (ς) with the same value of the ordinary sigma (Σ,σ), ie, 200. This procedure is justified because: 1- Writing by hand it is easy to draw the lowercase vav (ϝ) with the shape of the sigma final (ς) and that is, almost for sure, the reason why the sigma final became the symbol for 6 in the Greek. But in the beginning it wasn't that way, ie, the 6 was represented by the vav (Ϝ,ϝ). 2- Almost all ancient manuscripts are in uppercase and there is no uppercase sigma final. 3 - In the Hebrew, in order to appear the features of Genesis 1:1, it is not made difference between normal and final characters.
