The Penny Dreadful

"Explaining humor is a lot like dissecting a frog. Nobody enjoys it and the frog usually dies as a result."

-E.B. White

The Penny Dreadful is a small press publication founded primarily to showcase the writing and cartoons of Mark Russell and his friends.  It is not about pennies. Here is a picture of what Mark Russell looks like:

In addition to publishing stories in The Penny Dreadful, Mark Russell has also published his work in more celebrated venues, like the McSweeney's website and Too Much Coffee Man Magazine. His work has been reviewed (positively) in publications as diverse as the Utne Reader and Bam! Kapow! He is also the author of a novella called The Superman Stories, which examines the implications of being born with godlike power while possessing the mental or moral frailties of a mere mortal.
If you would like to read some of his work, this webpage contains some samples of short pieces and cartoons that have appeared in the Penny Dreadful. If you would like to read some of his longer works, you'll just have to buy a copy of The Penny Dreadful. Also, if you're interested, you can read his latest entry at Mark's Fun Blog.
