This is THE LAST stop in the Northland section. And your last big beach section.
The border of Auckland is only 3 kms south of here - and starts where the tar-seal on Black Swamp Road ends.

Mangawhai Travellers' Rest is at 4 Insley Street, Mangawhai Village and is probably THE MOST CONVENIENT LOCATION in Mangawhai being  across the road from Mangawhai Four Square Supermarket which is open from 8a.m. - 8p.m. every day.

If you're still a long way north of Mangawhai and are planning your trip towards Mangawhai from the north ( Ruakaka, Uretiti Beach, Waipu ) you can stay at Dragon's Spell up at the top of Cullen Road, Waipu (look out for the signs at very end of Cullen Rd, 7.5km up from Cove Rd, about the intersection of grid lines 1737 and 6008, but you are asked to call ahead first. Fee is a koha/donation.

If you're heading south from Mangawhai :  To find out what the tide is doing, go to www.mangawhaiweather.co.nz and be aware that
the very rare fairy terns and other shore-birds are nesting along the beach during November.

A place to stay along Pakiri Beach.

After crossing the Poutawa Stream from the North, walk another 15-20 minutes south. Look for two tall manuka posts with a Te Araroa sign attached  behind which there are two red flags back on the dunes. This will lead you onto a path that takes you to the olive grove where you can put up your tent.  For an extra charge and if available, you can rent a small cabin or caravan.
We also offer a range of quality savoury pies that you can purchase and heat in the oven in the outdoor kitchen. For an extra cost you can use the gas-heated outdoor double bath if it is available.

There are no shops in Pakiri. The next section of the trail is steep up-and-down and is quite hard going.

Matt's place along 107 Govan Wilson Road ( Mobile : 0212057404 )is a comfortable distance for a 1 day walk from Pakiri.
Camping $20.  You'll get a free drink, and a hot shower and if the weather is bad you can use the barn.

It comes out on State Highway One at the 'Top of the Dome' Cafe  ( which has recently closed down and is up FOR SALE )
where you used to be able to get substantial cafe-style ( including gluten free/vegetarian and vegan options ) food / drinks.
Awaiting notification of a re-opening date.  ( November 2019)
